I have an ONN Roku TV and get a black screen on all the apps

I have had my TV for 2 months and it has worked perfectly all along until yesterday. I was watching TV and it just went to a blank screen.  Now every streaming app I have, Netflix, Hulu, Roku channel, Paramount+, Disney, etc., is not working.  They all give me a list of shows to watch, but, when I choose a show and hit play, all I get is a blank screen.  Please help!

  • Hi, Abhijeet

Greetings, and welcome to the Roku Community.

We see that you're having issues with your Onn Roku TV. May we know if the black screen appears when accessing a particular channel, or are all channels affected by the issue? Also, have you tried performing a complete factory reset to see if it resolves the issue? For more information on how to factory reset your Roku TV, please refer to How do I factory reset my Roku® streaming device?

Kindly keep us posted on how it goes.

    All the best,
    Kash

  • My Onn Roku Class 4K UHD (2160P) LED tv is only 3 years old and has been doing the same thing for months. I’ve had internet folks come out to check all that thinking it was my internet. No change. Tv would stream  if I used a firestick but then that would black out. I bought a Roku and it’s blacking out with that too. Has sound but no picture and has to be restarted multiple times for screen to come back on for menu. I will never buy one of their TVs again. It’s embarrassing to have a house full of people and a **bleep**ty 70 inch tv. Over it! Good luck on yours but I think I’m trashing this one once I can save up for another. 😭

14-month-old Roku TV 43", black screen, tried all the 10 or so steps recommended, but none worked.  It was not worth the money, and customer support was not helpful at all.  I am more than willing to buy and replace the defective part myself but not even that info I can get from support.  The TV powers on, I can hear sound, a black screen.  If it is due to OS and driver upgrade then, which OS can fix it?  Will the TV pull the new OS automatically considering there is no way I can interface to force an upgrade?

The first thing to try is a "System restart".  You can find it under Settings->System->Power or just unplug the TV for a few minutes and plug it back in.

  • I have a Sharp Aquos TV and a Roku Stick and I am having the same issue.  I can see the Roku home screen and all of my apps.  When I am in the app I can see the guides and menu, but when I actually choose a show it goes to a black screen and I can still hear the show fine.  Only when you choose the show does it go to a black screen.

Same issues that began approximately 5 weeks ago. Amazon prime app definitely does not work. Apple plus and Hulu is hit or miss. Netflix seems to work ok. I have an antenna in my window for local channels and  the tv never blacks out. Or is hasn’t so far. Owned the tv about 2.5 years.

  • I’ve had my ONN Roku tv for less than a month and just had the same issue. I did a restart and it foxed the problem. If it happens again I’m returning it.

      Hi kmdice,

      Greetings from the Roku Community!

We'd like to take a closer look into this issue that you're having with the Roku TV. May we know what the current software version of your Roku TV is? (Settings, system, and about) Please try to unplug the Roku TV for 1 to 2 minutes and re-plug it back again.

We'll wait for your response, and we hope this helps.

      Thanks,

      John

        Hi John

I don’t have a picture of the problem because the restart resolved it. Everything looked normal, the home screen, the apps and menus. When I selected a program from any app, the screen went black and I had no sound. If I pressed fast forward, i would see a tiny picture at the bottom but the full screen remained black with no sound. I went to system and dod a restart. That fixed it but I am concerned it may be an ongoing issue.

  • I am having a similar problem with my ONN Roku TV. I can get to the apps but when I try to play the movies the screen goes black but I can hear the sound. Specifically Disney + and Amazon prime. Our TV is only 2 years old.

      Hi Maflaishans,

      Welcome to the Roku Community!

We're sorry to hear about the playback issue with the channel. In some cases, that resolves the issue. Make sure you restart your Roku device before adding the channel back in to ensure the process is successful. Here are the steps you can follow:

      1. Remove the channel: Highlight the channel tile on your home screen and press the Star button to open the options menu. Select Remove channel and confirm.
        • Note: If you remove a subscription channel billed to your Roku account, you must cancel the subscription before seeing the Remove Channel option. For help identifying this type of subscription channel, read the detailed article about removing a channel.
      2. Restart your Roku device: If reaching the power cord to unplug your Roku device is inconvenient, you can restart the device from the settings menu. Go to Settings > System > PowerSystem Restart > Restart. (If you do not see a Power submenu, skip to the next step).
      3. Reinstall the channel: After your Roku device restarts, visit the Roku Channel Store and add the channel again.
        • Note: If you add a subscription channel billed to your Roku account, you must re-subscribe.

For more references on how to troubleshoot any channel playback issues, you can visit our Support page.

Please keep us posted regarding the behavior you are experiencing, and we will be more than happy to continue assisting you further.

      All the best,

      Chel

My ONN roku tv stopped displaying anything out of nowhere. my tv is barely 2 years old and it’s so frustrating. The screen is dark purple and you can hear that the tv works when you’re clicking around on the remote and press netflix for example you can hear everything but can’t see anything and no one can help.

      Hi tamaruhh,

      Welcome to the Roku Community!

We'd like to help you out about this and see how we can get you up and running. Try restarting your device by navigating to Home>>Settings>>System>>Power>>System restart. Or unplugging it and then resting it for 10–15 minutes, then trying again to see if there's any differences.

      Please keep us posted!

      Thanks,

      Rey
