Constant Voice Remote Pro battery warnings, Even when charged.

We have an RC 880 voice remote pro purchased about a year ago. In the last couple of months I've started getting low battery warnings flashing on the TV screen, often followed a few seconds later by another indication that the battery is charged.   Sometimes it will go back and forth several times saying low battery, then for example 75% charged, then low battery again...

I have tried (4 times) resetting the remote by pressing and holding the power and back buttons. I've rebooted the TV.  Read a couple dozen similar reports here, and tried all the troubleshooting tips on the Roku help pages.

There are no other remotes paired with the TV.

Because of the conflicting battery level messages on the screen, seems like a bug in the remote software, or defective wiring, sensor, or battery.

Whatever it is, it's very annoying, and not something I would expect from relatively new OEM top of the line (and rather pricey) device.

Roku support:  what can be done?

Thanks!
