On my Sony Bravia remote, I was able to turn on the cc with the remote that came with my TV. At the bottom of the remote there is a row of buttons that you can push to play, rewind and fast forward. I pushed the fast forward button one time, then immediately push the rewind button two times. This turned the cc on the program I am watching at the time on the Roku app. Weird, but it worked. I found out on my own by playing with the buttons. I hope this helped.
