YouTube Playback Speed [is NOW WORKING~!!!!] suddenly no longer available March2022 ?

UPDATE:  This afternoon while watching a YouTube video on Roku, I toggled to Settings and then to "Speed" and where there was no speed selection as of last week, now there is a selection of various speeds! I am now able to adjust the playback speed! It is now working today April 17, 2025.

====================================

I use Roku Ultra on a 2017 Samsung 4K tv

After years of the Playback Speed being available on the YouTube Chanel on my Roku device/SmartTV this option is no longer available as of March2022(?) and several format changes have been made on the Roku version of YouTube Channel.

YouTube Playback works and is available on my computer browser as well as all of the other settings,, but not on the Roku YouTube Channel on my TV.. the Playback speed is no longer an option.

I realize in 2020 there was a YouTube Playback speed post that referred people to Youtube to solve the issue,, I went there and could not find the answer ... SO, my questions are:

Did anyone find within the Google/Youtube community or the "Contact us - YouTube Help" area to fix this particular problem of the sudden absence of the Playback Speed option on ROKU?

OR, Is there an area within the Roku Settings to fix this?

thank you,,, Jas

  • I'm having the exact same problem. I use the play speed adjustment when watching You Tube on my other TV with AMAZON FIRE STICK and on my PC with CHROME browser but on my TCL TV with ROKU i have no speed control options. Now this just started recently. I have had this TV for a few years and have always been able to watch YOU TUBE and adjust the speed. Its only recently that the option is no longer available. I have done all the updates with no success. I even did a FACTORY DEFALT and am having the same challenge. Very frustration. I hope someone has a fix soon or YOU TUBE or ROKU fix the problem ASAP!

  • I’m having the same problem. The Playback Speed feature was there for quite a long time, and I probably used it daily. About 6 months ago, it disappeared overnight. I searched for an update, but it seems I’m using the latest version: 2.2 build 105005058. If anyone has advice on how to get it back, I would appreciate it.

I also agree that ROKU should be in contact with Google/YouTube to restore the playback speed.

I have noticed since this thread started and especially in this past several months that there have been some great upgrades and features to the YouTube Channel on Roku. But alas, when clicking thru the different options,,, I notice the Playback Speed option has still not been restored.

    Why Roku, why??

I just want to watch more content,, and I wanna speed up the "slow talkers" LOL

thank you Roku,, please hear our request and implement~!!

      Hi James_NYC,

Thanks for posting here in the Roku Community!

We're sorry to hear about the issue you've experienced with the YouTube playback speed feature. Rest assured that we take this concern seriously and have taken note of this. Kindly be informed that channels on the Roku platform are designed and maintained by the channel providers themselves. Contacting Youtube directly and inquiring further about the issue to be addressed is recommended.

Kindly refer to this link for Youtube support's contact information: Youtube Help

      All the best,
      Kash

  • There is a support thread tracking the issue about not being able to manage playback speed using apps on devices other than Android (and only if not casting) at https://support.google.com/youtube/thread/153199802. I suggest following it for updates.

To get action on this, go to YouTube and submit feedback describing the issue and how it impacts your desire to use YouTube.

My use is down 50% because of this issue. How about you?

If you don’t know where the feedback option is, please see my blog post about this issue at https://theitsolutionist.com/2022/04/29/youtube-please-bring-back-video-speed-control-to-the-roku-app/

So, new here, hope Im doing this correctly, it is now May 2022, and no fix on Youtube playback speed yet. I've contacted Roku, they say it's Youtube, but my Youtube playback was there, and worked fine till Roku did an update in March, so I tend to believe it's Roku issue, be that as it may they have not offered me anything but pointing at Youtube as culprit. And, yeah, it's not the end of the world, but I began learning guitar during pandemic, and to be able to follow chording techniques, solo parts, etc slowing down is essential to learning. So, it is important, even vital, to some of us, and apparently nothing is going to be done about it. So disappointing that billion dollar companies have no level of accountability to consumers...just my two cents worth.

Today is May 18, 2022 and my YouTube speed control on my Roku device is no longer functional as of today. I went online to find out if anyone else was having that problem and found you question useful to me, thank you. I used my iPhone to see if YouTube still had the speed control ability and it does. Evidently it’s just the Roku.

Roku supplies the Roku streaming platform.  Channel developers provide a version of their channel apps written to run on the Roku platform.

The earlier posts you've found saying you need to contact YouTube about the Roku-compatible version of YouTube's app are correct.

thank you Maikaiguy,,, and as I stated <<"I went there (YouTube customer service/community forum) and could not find the answer">>

So that is why I asked <<"Did anyone find within the Google/Youtube community or the "Contact us - YouTube Help" area to fix this particular problem of the sudden absence of the Playback Speed option on ROKU? ">>

      thank you

I'm not experiencing that issue. Those that have reported the issue, when they actually bother to check the version of the app, had an older version. As for why, I have no idea. Google would control that. But I have the speed controls on mine.

What version/build of the YouTube app do you have?

Antarza, Roku didn't create the Youtube channel/app - Youtube/Google did.
