Unable to play HBO Max content on Roku app

my Sony Bravia will not play HBO max content on the Roku app.  I have not found a solution to this.

  • Welcome, dlaw

It seems that you're having trouble accessing content on the HBO Max app through the Roku Channel. Let's take some steps to see how it goes.

    1. Check your Wi-Fi connection (Navigate to Settings > Network > About to check status)
    2. Reset your Router (Unplug from the power source, wait for 10 seconds, and plug directly into a power outlet)
    3. Restart your Roku device ( go to Settings > System > Power > System restart > Restart)
    4. Update the Roku app (Highlight the app, press the star (*) to open the settings menu, select Check for Updates)

    Hope this helps!

The Roku app on 3rd party TVs is solely for accessing The Roku Channel. You cannot access other providers, such as HBO Max through the app. If you have subscribed to MAX through Roku, then you can only watch that service using a Roku player or TV. If you subscribe directly with HBO, then you can log into the MAX app on any device or their website.

The Roku app on other TVs is not a substitute for a Roku player connected to your TV.

dlaw I just looked at The Roku Channel on a non-Roku device (Android TV based) and I can confirm there is no method of accessing any premium service on that app. My searching shows only three ways to access a premium service you subscribe to through Roku: 1) on a Roku device (player or TV) through The Roku Channel, 2) on the Roku app on a smart phone (I tested this on my iPhone, but I would expect it to be the same on an Android phone), and 3) through The Roku Channel website https://therokuchannel.roku.com. I can find no other way to access premium services that are subscribed through Roku themselves.

If you want to watch HBO MAX on your Sony TV, you need to subscribe directly through HBO, or have a subscription through a TV provider. I have access to MAX via my cell phone account, and can access it on any device. Subscriptions made through Roku are restricted to only viewing on Roku devices (with the two exceptions I list above).
