Most likely it is something in the hardware or in this case, the lack of hardware capabilities that the TCL has that makes it unable to handle the latest OS. With a lot of these budget brands, they cut corners on capabilities and the hardware they use. Max may also have decided not to support its app on the various third-party brand TVs that use a Roku OS, due to those varying hardware and TV capabilities.
I don't think this decision has anything to do with legacy hardware incapable of running the latest OS, or MAX not wanting to support TCL TVs. I own 6 TCL Roku TVs, 3 of which are several years older than these two now-unsupported models, and those all continue to be supported and run the latest Roku OS and the MAX app. My guess is that Roku is abandoning support for the 8k TV models because they require extra work to support, and 8k hasn't caught on enough to make it worth their while. So those of us who bought "cutting edge" 8k Roku TVs in 2021-2022 are now stuck.
From the Roku OS 14 release notes, the only three models that are excluded are the only 8k Roku devices ever produced, by two different manufacturers (TCL and Hisense).
- All Roku TV models (2014-2024), excluding models 65R648, 75R648, and 75U800GMR, are expected to receive Roku OS 14.

Very odd to exclude the 8K models, as of Oct 28, 2025 Roku is still selling the 8K devices and at a premium price point, I had the same issues with HBO Max and now the Roku Channel.

It's only the 3 models

FYI These 8K TVs are not made/sold by Roku but rather other manufacturers (TCL/HiSense) that license RokuOS (same as with all non-Roku manufactured RokuOS TVs).
As previously stated Roku has deprecated RokuOS for those models, and wont receive newer versions (beyond OS 13.1).
Apps that are developed/designed with multiple app versions/builds for multiple Roku model types/models (e.g. NetFlix/YT/YTTV) are more likely to support older app versions/builds on older RokuOS versions, whereas those that use a single app version/build (e.g. HBOMax, Peacock TV) for all RokuOS devices are less likely to support older RokuOS versions.
Since app developers (e.g. HBOMax, Prime, Apple TV etc) can/may have their own OS version (and/or hardware) requirements independent of Roku's this results in "uni-version" apps eventually becoming explicitly unsupported on older Roku devices w/older RokuOS versions.
RokuOS TVs (or streaming players) arent unique in this regard (deprecated/un-updated OS firmware/apps), and the solution to continued TV usage is simply to use an external player (Roku or otherwise) via HDMI.

SquidMark , Roku themselves have never had an 8k TV. I searched for the TCL TV at multiple retailers and none of them show it. It wouldn't be too surprising that there's some leftover stock somewhere, so buyer beware definitely applies.

Right & I have the 75R648... So... there's that.

Hey everyone!
We understand the issue you have encountered with the MAX app is no longer available on the Roku device.
Let’s try a few things to see if we can fix it:
Remove and Reinstall the app. Often, that can clear up the problem. Restarting your Roku device before adding the app back can also help make sure everything goes smoothly.
We also recommend checking our support page for troubleshooting Steps on How to resolve the channel playback issues. If the issue persists, we recommend you contact the App provider for further assistance.
Keep us posted.

Nice try, but did you read the prior messages? Our 2 yr old TVs aren't supported in the Roku OS 14 update. So doing what you suggest simply wastes time & accomplishes nothing. I have the 75R648 - check out the latest supported version (13.x)

Great, I have the hisense model and just found this out. Kind of ridiculous to spend this much on the tv to find out apps wouldn't get supported this quickly

Skullman309 That is the problem with some of these budget level brands that pay Roku to license/use their operating system as they tend to use budget level components that they don't keep updated and/or become obsolete quickly.

Except that it's only 3 TVs affected out of hundreds of models. And they're 8K models. I think they messed up on the hardware installed & we should have a class action law thingie going to provide an upgrade path (replace the faulty hardware).
