Fast forward and Rewind don't work on YouTube anymore

I have a Roku Ultra. I don't see the steps to fix the problem of my remote not scanning forward or backward in YouTube. It just stopped scanning 2 days ago. I have to keep pressing the remote instead of simply holding it down. It's a pain.

  • I don't know about your device in particular, but on my Roku device I fixed this problem by restarting my system. I did this by selecting the following on home screen: settings—>system—>power—system restart. When my system came back on my YouTube app worked properly again. I hope that helps you!

Thank you!! It's been so frustrating not fast forwarding on YouTube. Your advice was perfect!

I'm glad it worked. I have to say, it does keep happening. Not every day, but probably once a week or every two weeks. Seems random, but the fix I posted has still worked every time.

Thanks for this. It fixed it and the YouTube is fast forward function is working normally again.

  • on your Roku device,

    goto: settings

    click OK

    goto: system

    click OK

    goto: Sytem restart

    click OK

WHILE IT IS RESTARTING TAKE OUT THE BATTERIES THAT ARE IN THE REMOTE (not sure if it is necessary but I did it anyway).

    Replace batteries.

now you should be able to do a fast forward/rewind without having to scrub 10 seconds at a time

  • I'm new to using this community. I don't understand it already. I can see everyone's problems (some of which are the same problems I'm having). What I don't see on anyone's posts are the resolutions to the problems. Can someone explain to me how this site works? Also, I hate the fact that Roku support isn't easily accessible. I've been putting off another problem because Roku support isn't easily accessible. Oh how I miss "Customer Service".

This is a complete repeat of my instructions, except for the addition of replacing batteries. Replacing batteries will not make a difference. If you're remote works it has good batteries. If you can use it to reset the TV, then it doesn't need new batteries at all.

I also have an Ultra unit. I did the reset, (Should have thought to myself_Brain Fart) Fixed mine for now. Seems obvious if resetting the unit cures the problem, even temporarily, it's not you tube or a TV issue. BUT! In my case, the remote that came with the unit, the movement to go left button died. So couldn't go back or accomplish a search. BAD! Went thru trouble shooting with Roku tech and now have a replacement remote. Did not have this problem with the original remote. Try searching thru remote problems that the remotes issued with the Ultra model and around the same time frame. Seems there is several reports of issues. My replacement has the TV controls which work fine with my Visio TV. If turns out to be the remote, that would be 2 issues I've experienced. Hey Roku, resetting is just a bandaid at best. Dig In! CUTOMER SERVICE!  Thanks all!

Not at all. The app gets in a weird state and resetting the devices clears that out.
No other video I I use has a similar issue (Disney+, Netflix, Amazon, Plex, etc.)

It's like rebooting a phone or a computer. Most app/applications/programs work fine but one has problems. Or remember the old solution of uninstall and reinstall stuff to fix issues? That still happens a lot on phones. Or clear all of an app's stored data.

No.. youtube said it's you. It works correctly on every other tv and medium I have. Only the Roku. It's exhausting and exasperating.

It's the YouTube app on Roku though. All other apps work fine. Plex, Disney+, Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.

YouTube/Google is responsible for the app, not Roku. Everyone else can get it right, so what is wrong with their app?

  • Similar problem here with the recent HiSense Roku TV. YouTube will rewind 10 seconds and then jump forward before it finishes the replay.

    • Did anyone find a solution for this problem—what’s the answer? How come there’s no answers in this thread? I have the same problem and wish there was some sort of solution that I too  can apply.

Yes, as listed in a previous post, the Roku tv system reset fixed the issue.

  • I am experiencing the same exact issue with my Roku system as well. (Feb. 14th, 2023 @ 01:41am EST) It was working fine yesterday. Now all of a sudden it don't scan forward or back, as you described in your issue. If anyone find a quick fix please let me know. Thanks in advance. Good health to you all.
