After you wrote "the channel" in your current post, I misunderstood this to mean you were having an issue with one channel on the Roku Channel App instead of understanding this to mean the channel as in the Roku Channel App, so to make sure I (and others) understood you correctly before replying, I looked at your original post in which you said "I am currently watching Charge in Charge on the TNBC Channel 334 in Live TV. I went into settings and chose closed caption off but when I watch any channel closed caption is on."
I felt bad that no one responded to your post and that it took nearly a year to get any response from the Roku community, so I did some troubleshooting with your issue, and I'll leave it up to you to decide if I was correct or not with what I found as it relates to your situation. The problem is I can't connect my Roku Ultra to your smart TV to see if that solves your problem, and you believe that this won't solve your problem without doing any troubleshooting on your own to prove that. Perhaps LDF will purchase a streaming device and let us know if this solves the issue or not.
All I can say is that on my Roku Ultra device, my Roku Express device, and my Roku 3 device, I went to the TNBC Channel which is now called the "NBC Comedy Vault" channel on the "Live TV Guide Roku Channel" app, version 13.7b6, (the "Live TV on The Roku Channel app" version 10.1b10 no longer is being supported) and The Roku Channel App version 12.5b18 -- which I assume you're using. I watched this NBC channel and other various channels, and I didn't see closed captions. I turned on closed captions and I was able to see them. I turned off closed captions and they went off. Since you posted that this issue with the closed captioning was happening to you on any channel and not just one specific channel, and I found this not to be the case when I watched various channels on the same Roku channel app on my Roku devices, then I'm sorry to say that it does appear that this issue is related to your Sony smart TV and is not related to the current Roku Channel app that works fine on my Roku Ultra, Roku Express, and Roku 3.
If your app version is still stuck on vs 1.0.73 for this many months then it's no longer being supported. This means that if you bought or found a streaming device that supported the Roku Channel app, then you should no longer have this issue. As long as you purchase the streaming device from a reputable store, if you find this didn't resolve your issue, you should be able to return the product -- but ask a representative from the store before you buy to make sure that if you return the product you get a full refund -- but this might be the only way to find out if this solves your issue.
I can see where you have trouble believing me because of this older post you replied to in which the poster said they also had 2 Ruku Ultras and was having the same issue, but that post was from 03-25-2024. And at that time when the glitch originally presented itself, it could have been a problem that we all experienced, but after a year has passed, Roku apparently has updated our supported devices and as far as I know, the issue has been resolved because it's not affecting me on my aging three Roku devices. But it appears, your Sony TV might not be supported so there may not have been a way for Roku to fix this for you because of the possibility that it isn't able to bring updates to your TV. Also if people were still having this issue with their Roku devices, you would see many people post their grievances, and this isn't happening. It's just happening with this Roku Channel app on your and other Sony smart TVs.
It is quite possible that no one responded to your post because the issue for everyone who had this happen on their supported devices was resolved, and members of this community may have assumed that no response was therefore needed. No one would have known that your issue wasn't resolved because they wouldn't have known that you potentially have an unsupported Roku channel app on your smart TV that wasn't able to be updated.
You can continue to be, understandably, upset, that your post was neglected, or you can follow the advice given and attempt to resolve your issue. You don't have to resolve your issue if you don't want to and you can continue watching the content with the closed captions for as long as that lasts because, as I said, the non-supported app could stop functioning just as the "Live TV on The Roku Channel app" no longer functions anywhere since Roku created the newer "Live TV Guide Roku Channel" app to replace it.
You have every right to continue to believe that "going out and buying a box would not have solved my problem," and you might be right if it hasn't solved that other poster's problem who has those two Roku Ultras who only posted once over a year ago and never has posted again on this forum to let anyone know if this person's problem was resolved, so there's no way to know unless you purchase a streaming device or borrow it from someone and do your own troubleshooting which may prove me wrong.
As far as I'm concerned until you do this, I've done all I could to attempt to help you and others on this thread, and even if you do this and prove that I'm incorrect with what I've posted, I'm not sure how much more of a help I can be to you as I don't own a Sony smart TV and can't troubleshoot this any more than I have. It's now up to you all who own these smart TVs to see if you can find a solution after reading what was posted in this thread.
Update:
One issue I fail to understand is why you can't just use another channel app that delivers similar free streaming content to your smart TVs. If you could download this channel, why can't you go to the channel store and download a different channel app, which doesn't have this closed caption issue? If you can't download another channel app that delivers similar free content without the closed captioning issue then this is another reason why it might be time to purchase or find a streaming device like a Roku. With a Roku device, you have the option to add and watch multiple free streaming channels, so in the unlikely event that you still have this issue with The Roku Channel app even after purchasing a Roku streaming device, it's most likely that another free streaming channel won't have this issue.
