Viewing YouTube of Jimmy Kimmel monologue video fails to load and play

Series of events and the problem:

I watch Jimmy Kimmel's monologue through the YouTube app.

When he presents a video during his monologue, that video does not load (the spinning dots spin forever)

and the screen freezes.

I use a Roku stick that has been updated to latest software.

Thanks for your help.

  • Not that I can remember. I would just advance the video past the point that it froze. Sometimes I could track back and get it to line up again. Kimmel videos won’t allow me to track back; only playing the parts that don’t freeze.

I have noticed that with the Jimmy videos, it works ok if I play the video on my phone with the YouTube app and then screen mirror to the tv. However, it still doesn’t work if I simply connect the phone app to the TV, for some reason. Leading me to believe it’s an issue with the Roku Youtube app, not simply one with either YouTube or Roku independently

    Hello JeffYorba

Thanks for reaching out here in the Community!

Does the issue only occur on a specific channel or across other channels installed on your Roku device?

If you haven't tried it yet, you can remove the affected channel and then re-install it. To ensure the process is successful, restart your device before adding the channel back in. We would recommend doing this from the Settings menu by navigating to Settings > System > Power (If you do not see a Power submenu, skip to the next step.) > System restart.

For detailed instructions, refer to this Support link: How do I resolve channel playback issues?

Let us know how it goes!

    Regards,
    Karla

Thank you, Karla.    Sorry, your suggestion failed,  but I have also failed in my description.

I tested your suggestion on the same Jimmy Kimmel monologue (the broadcast with his comments about the Fox settlement , maybe the 19th?).     During his monologue he shows the Fox website, and it is when this web site appears, my problem begins.    The signal goes into indefinite circling dots.

FYI - I also set the Roku to "NO' bandwidth saving to ensure signal.    I've turned off all WiFi devices, to provide strongest signal to Roku,   Still Roku fails.

      What do you suggest next?

'Karla's '   first response was within minutes of my post.   There has been no response to my reply indicating the suggested steps did not resolve the problem.

Conclusion: Karla is a chatbot, poorly programmed, and simply responds to key words.   Roku could employ real people and provide much needed jobs to regions of the USA that need them.

Same issue, TCL Roku tv, YouTube channel. It's driving me batsh&t! I never thought it may be a Roku issue tho... It only happens on JK show, I watch tons of YT vids with no issues.

  • Been having the same issue for the past few weeks now, exactly as described. Watching on a TCL Roku TV

  • It's not just Roku - I have a Google AirTV and it's happening as well! It's on the YouTube app of the AirTV (I.e not on my phone or computer) and ONLY on Jimmy Kimmel's monologue! Super frustrating!!! I have 2 AirTVs and both are up to date. Software on both is good. I can skip over the parts that freeze, but it's so annoying. What the heck is going on???

I resolved my issue employing the comments of a previous writer.

I suggest you change the resolution (?) to 360 or 480.   It appears that Roku and maybe Google Air have a maximum bandwidth they will present and when a broadcast goes beyond their allotment, Roku and Google shut them down.

I wrote a huge post with differences in version and update numbers and dates between my older tv that shows it fine and my newer tv that has the issue, and I lost it. I'm so fn irritated rn, having typed out all these numbers from photos and laying it all out....

Maybe I'll do it again tomorrow but the workaround shown above does seem to work, I went from 1080 to 480 and it works fine. Isn't even bad viewing except some frame rate issues here and there that most wouldn't notice. Thanks to the person who suggested that and I'm outta here for the night. ✌️

Wow, so it's something with the smarttv app, and only for JK... Wth.

I'm testing a different older smart TV right now, will report back shortly.

  • This happens to me too but I have a Chromecast with Google TV.

  • Same issue. Been having it for several days. I also have a TCL Roku and am using the YouTube app. It only happens during Jimmy Kimmel monolog. I've uninstalled the app, restarted the TV, reinstalled the app, signed back in, and tried to play the same video. My screen is just solid black and the progress bar is not moving. Nothing is playing. This video works on the YouTube app on my phone.

**bleep**, thanks for letting us know the troubleshooting so I don't have to go through all that, fr. Only thing I've found to work rn is a comment above to change the settings to 480. Works perfect for me and the quality is still decent. Just gotta remember to change it back when viewing something else.
