Trying to connect Roku Express | HD Roku Streaming Device with stereo receiver

When watching regular FIOS TV I can get audio through my stereo receiver, but when I switch to Roku (Roku Express | HD Roku Streaming Device) , I cannot.  Older Samsung TV - any options?

Re: Trying to connect Roku Express | HD Roku Streaming Device with stereo receiver

Hi @tomgold,

Welcome to the Roku Community!

Thank you for letting us know that you are not getting audio from your stereo receiver when you use your Roku device streaming platform. No worries, we are here to assist.

We would like to know a couple of details below:

  • What is the model of your Stereo receiver?
  • Does it happen from all channels or only specific channels?

We look forward to your response.

Cheers,
The Roku Community Team

Re: Trying to connect Roku Express | HD Roku Streaming Device with stereo receiver

You haven't really told us much. For example I have:

[all input devices] -- HDMI --> AV Receiver --> Speakers and TV

So, Satellite TV, Roku, Blu Ray, etc. all have their audio handled in exactly the same way.

However, decades ago I used to have a more convoluted set up where video went straight(ish) to the TV and audio connections went to an audio-only receiver. This one required making the right connections and setting the right inputs to get everything working together. If you're doing something like that, you will probably need something like an HDMI audio extractor to take audio from Roku's HDMI output and run it to the stereo. I say probably on the extractor because there were some old "Express+" devices that had separate analog audio outs.

It is an older receiver - Yamaha HTR-5540

Re: Trying to connect Roku Express | HD Roku Streaming Device with stereo receiver

it looks like that one came out about 6 years before HDMI took over the AV world. Another possibility is if the TV itself has analog audio outs, you could run those into the receiver? How is the box that works connected? Does its audio outs go straight to the receiver or to the TV?

Re: Trying to connect Roku Express | HD Roku Streaming Device with stereo receiver

Looks like the box audio goes straight to the receiver.

Attached is a picture of the TV options and of the back of the cable box.

Looks like the audio outs on TV could go to the cable box, but I don't want cables hanging out.  I have a hole in the wall behind the tv- not sure I could snake an rca pin back there but I guess I can try (or at least first try the tv audio out to receiver to see if it works).  What would the rca pins go into on the back of the receiver ... any unused female like CD or V-Aux ?TVTVCable box (top)Cable box (top)

Re: Trying to connect Roku Express | HD Roku Streaming Device with stereo receiver

I would assume that the audio connections in your TV picture are inputs.  I think "AV IN 2" labels all the jacks below it.  But you may have audio OUTPUTS elsewhere.

I think I'm looking at the side of your TV - there may be more ports on the back,  (Side ports are often meant for convenient temporary connections.)

Yeah any input on the receiver should work - then you just select whichever one it is.

Re: Trying to connect Roku Express | HD Roku Streaming Device with stereo receiver

Since audio is already connected from the tv to the receiver and works fine thru the receiver on regular tv, I am still not clear why it does not thru the receiver when I switch to Roku.  Assume it is because Roku is going thru HDMI 3 - a different input.  Attached is the diagram of the back of the TV.  Does that show you how this might be corrected?back of tvback of tv

Re: Trying to connect Roku Express | HD Roku Streaming Device with stereo receiver

Before you said:  "Looks like the box audio goes straight to the receiver."  I thought you meant the FIOS box.  ?

Is there a connection from the TV audio outs (Item 1 in your diagram) to the receiver?

And, if so, are there two sets of connections?  (ie One from FIOS? And one from the TV?)  If there are already two connections into the receiver, then all you need to do is select the other input on the receiver.

Re: Trying to connect Roku Express | HD Roku Streaming Device with stereo receiver

Switching to the other inputs on the receiver does not bring in the volume when on Roku.  Just one set of RCAs going from tv to receiver I believe.  Have to take it off the wall to clearly see.
