I believe you are referring to the themes. Roku does push seasonal themes, as well as the occasional commercial tie-in theme. You can prevent those from a setting with the menu system. Check for that.
Screen savers are not normally pushed, except in combination with themes. Turning off seasonal themes would stop associated screen saver changes as well. There are several hundred screen savers available, including many patriotic ones. The quality of those varies.
As for not doing a seasonal theme for Independence Day, I too am disappointed that Roku overlooked that.
