will a roku support a standard http stream, a non-HLS one?

I know there are hls issues, but the only way I can get transcoding to work right now is over hls. I am thinking of building a transcoding file system like the one they have for flac to mp3 but for video.
but if I would just get it to stream a standard non hls stream I could solve all my problems.

so is it possible to stream a non HLS http stream to a roku, and how? what settings and codec do I need for the stream? and container?

Re: will a roku support a standard http stream, a non-HLS o

This has been discussed so many times a simple search in the forum would have answered this question.

Since you have downloaded the docs per your other forum messages, you will see the ONLY formats that Roku will use.

Have you tried your HLS stream with one of the 3.0 builds?

If you have an HLS standard compliant stream that doesn't play, we'd be interested in looking at it. Of course, if you are asking about playing a non-standard HLS stream we aren't so interested in that.

Quite a few people are using HLS without issue. You didn't mention what tools you were using that were having issues or what the issues where.

There is no technical reason that VLC won't work, we've tested it quite a bit internally. Ultimately however, we went with a commercial hardware solution. We just couldn't achieve the stability required with VLC.

Re: will a roku support a standard http stream, a non-HLS o

I use vlc. I have to admit I have not tried recently. I got tired of fighting and switched to http streaming of mp4s hence my script to convert certain mkv's
i was going to wait till vlc went 1.2 figuring by then the firmware would be fixed.
I assume its a standard hls stream. I will try it again in a few days.
The only reason I assumed it was a roku issue was this email from playon.tv, so please is this email just spin? or is there some truth to it?

You will already have it by now. Roku pushed the update to everyone automatically if you they did not manually install it. Roku has not fixed any of the HTTP Live Streaming bugs yet, but they say they will soon. For now, we have accommodated for the audio/video sync bug with a change in the latest version of PlayOn.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Thank you for contacting PlayOn Support.

I don't know I asked on the vlc irc channel and the answer I got was "Well, noone will answer because 'standard compliant' does not mean anything"
is there a test I can perform to see?
I assuming it is, because generally vlc is very standards conscious, but I like I said I don't know for sure.
