Updated Developer Agreement

I wanted to point out to everyone that we recently updated the developer agreement.

Among the changes are a requirement to message the user in the case that your service is unusable:
In the event Your Channel Application becomes unusable by Roku users (for
instance if Your server goes down), Your Channel Application will contain a mechanism to
detect this problem that will generate and publish a message on the user interface of Your
Channel Application telling end users that Your service is down and which recommends
that they come back later. Where your Channel Application is subscription based or
contains one or more transactional “for purchase” offerings (whether such subscriptions or
billing arrangements are managed by Roku or otherwise), the message must also provide
an email or phone number associated with and monitored by You where the user can
obtain more information about the outage.

as well as a prohibition on International and foreign language channels without written approval from Roku:

B. The Content and Channel Application accessed, displayed and performed via your
Channel Application may not:
i. Be unlawful, harmful, threatening, harassing, defamatory, or invasive of
another’s privacy or right of publicity;
ii. Be encouraging of conduct that could constitute a criminal offense, give rise to
civil liability, or otherwise violate any applicable local, state, national, or
international law;
iii. Be Content that You do not have a right to transmit under any law or contractual
or fiduciary relationships;
iv. Violate any federal, state, international, or any other child pornography laws,
child sexual exploitation laws or laws prohibiting the depiction of minors
engaged in sexual conduct;
v. Contain forged headers or manipulated identifiers which disguise the origin of
any Content;
vi. For a Channel Application offered through the Channel Store, the Content may
not be obscene or pornographic and Your Channel Information may not contain
profanity or pornographic images, as determined by Roku in its sole discretion;
or
vii. contain foreign language or international Content generated outside of the US,
including but not limited to movies, sports, video on demand and/or news
services, without the prior written approval of Roku.

Re: Updated Developer Agreement

I think these are valid questions:
1) - If I was to make a Spanish channel for a spanish tv station in Southern California, would that require Roku's written permission to create? ie is Spanish for California considered a foreign language, or is it an alternate native language for the state?
2) - If I was to create a French channel and submit it to the French channel store/region - would that be considered a foreign language channel and require permission, or since it is submitted to the channel store that services France, would it then be a native language without requiring permission?

Re: Updated Developer Agreement

How long does everyone have to update the ~300 channels in the channel stores before you begin deleting them for non-compliance, or are existing channels exempted from the 'unusable/server down' clause?

Re: Updated Developer Agreement

i think these are rules which roku need to publish,,,
Like microsoft publishes rules and hackers and virus dont care any damn...
Their legal must have given the instructions to give these wording .. not as a person...
So read them and...

In general, we'd recommend getting in touch with us if there's any question. That way we can give the best advice.

On that particular topic, please update on your next channel update. In general, if a channel is working, it probably not going to be a problem. However, if we get lots of reports of the channel not functioning correctly, we may pull the channel until resolved, and at that point will likely insist on the updated messaging/error handling.
