NDK Access

I am interested in porting an OpenGL game to the Roku. In reading both the SDK documents and the forums, it seems like the NDK is the right path for testing a port. What is required to gain access to the NDK or documentation for the NDK?

Thank you for your time,

Re: NDK Access

I chased after this for months, as soon as I found out about it. I finally got a hold the person in charge of giving out access to the NDK. However, I was told that they do not currently have the resources to give access to it to anyone else right now.

Wild speculation follows. 🙂

I imagine the NDK is still very unpolished and they're having to make a lot of changes/fixes/additions to it to accommodate their current partners/clients/evil alien overlords. Hopefully the goal is to eventually make it public after it's been banged on enough internally. The 'not yet' language in their blurb is vague, but better than a statement to the effect that it won't ever be made public.

Re: NDK Access

I am sure the NDK breaks the sandbox in which we are put with BrightScript, so you can do more by directly accessing the hadrware - including evil - and that would jeopardize the image Roku is presenting of it being a secured, locked-down black box to which providers can trust their precious streaming content (i am thinking of GoogleTV and Boxee issues). So maybe if you use NDK, to publish a channel there might be a request for code review (or maybe even the channel be built by Roku from said sources) which would be tedious process.

Re: NDK Access

Any change on this?

Will it be also available on old Roku HD box?

Re: NDK Access

Roku are, understandably, keeping the NDK under tight control and only letting select companies have access. This only makes sense in lieu of their content partners and liabilities if it's used to hack the box (which probably wouldn't be that hard).

Still, as an end developer, it sucks.
