It hasn't officially been tested under linux (it's been tested under Win7 home premium, WinXP pro sp3, and OSX snow leopard).
Having said that, it should just work since there's no O/S specific code in the plugin.
(Note, the templates preferences page you mention is unrelated to the project templates in the new project wizard. When the "new" button is finally fixed, that prefs page will be for code fragment templates).

Which flavor/version of linux are you using?

Re: Eclipse Plugin for Brightscript

I am using Debian 6.I used this to write and troubleshoot apps for my media center. The brightscript installed okay but I just do not see like the templates for the simplevideoplayer .I do not own a windows 0S.I long since move from that operating system some 5 years ago (when I was an adminstrator and IT manager for a company).Just wanted an easier way to test like the videoplayer and to modify it and other brs script

FWIW, you should be aware that Debian is not one of the linux flavors that the Eclipse project itself currently tests against.
The platforms they did explicitly test against for Eclipse 3.7.1 are listed here: http://www.eclipse.org/eclipse/development/readme_eclipse_3.7.1.html
Ubuntu, which is a Debian derivative, was tested against by the Eclipse guys... but details do matter, and Ubuntu these days is different from Debian in a few notable ways.
You could be running into an Eclipse or BrightScript plugin bug that is specific to Debian or something related to your specific configuration of Debian.
Note, the Eclipse release notes mention that GCJ has been known to have issues in relation to Eclipse. Are you using GCJ for your java runtime?

In any case, I'll install a copy of Debian 6 inside a VM (I won't be able to get to it for a day or two) and try it out myself and let you know what I find.

I think you misunderstood my comment & question about which java you are using...

The question wasn't JRE vs JDK (a JRE is sufficient for general use of Eclipse, and specifically for the BrightScript plugin, but a JDK would also work).
The question was: Which java implementation are you using (and more specifically, are you using GCJ)?
There are several java implementations available on Debian: OpenJDK, Sun, Or GCJ.

OK, I've done a test of the BrightScript Project wizard on a fresh installation of Debian 6 + OpenJDK 6 + Eclipse 3.7.1 Java IDE + BrightScript Plugin (+ the underlying DLTK libs) and it works as expected.
The expected list of project templates is there, and I can create new projects based on those templates with no problems.

So, you're experiencing something related to your specific installation/configuration of Eclipse, OpenJDK, or Debian.

Are you seeing anything relevant in the "Problems" or "Error Log" views?

Re: Eclipse Plugin for Brightscript

I'm unable to install this, because I've got PDT configured for PHP development. PDT links against DLTK 3.0 and apparently you can only have one version of DTLK configured at a time...

Cannot complete the install because of a conflicting dependency.

Pity, I'd really like to have this working. Are you guys working on upgrading it to DLTK 3.0?

Yes, this is a known issue and mods to allow it to work with DLTK 3 are being worked on.

In the meantime, the workaround is to install another instance of eclipse (without the PDT or anything else that depends on DLTK 3).
Unlike most other applications, eclipse is designed to work seamlessly with multiple installation instances per machine (I've personally got 4 different instances of eclipse in different versions using different workspaces, with no issues)
