I've looked through several of the entries in the forum. I've read things from Roku and other sources to get the new remote paired. I've read the instructions that CAME with the new remote. I've on occasion had to change a remote, but until now never a streaming stick. It's NEVER been a PITA of this magnitude.
AOC 21" TV which works JUST FINE. It pairs fine, and on the 8th test it always gets the volume to work - so the first 7 TV codes don't pair but the 8th one is fine.
Roku Streaming Stick 4K, Model 3820
The CURRENT, Roku Remote I’d like to replace SAYS it's an RC-AL7 and the on-screen display says it's an RC-406.
My EXISTING remote WORKS but is getting older and the volume buttons are no longer consistent or reliable. I want to replace the remote. SO, existing TV works, existing remote mostly works but needs to be replaced.
I went out to Amazon and found what it said was the right remote for the 4K streaming stick: That one turned out to be an RC-GZ1, and on which I was unable to get the volume and mute to work.
BACK to Amazon and found a DIFFERENT remote - this time one that specifically SAYS "Replacement OEM RC-AL7 Universal Streaming Player Remote Control for Roku Streaming Stick and TV with Voice". On screen it SAYS it's a model RC786 and on the remote it says RC-FA5.
I have no volume or mute, and when I go into "Set up remote for TV control" it defaults to IR setup, which I presume should be fine. I can get INTO the TV code, but it DOES NOT go to the 8th code, which is what works on my existing remote. It only goes to the 6th code (instead of 8th), then says it’s “Unable to setup remote.”
SO, WHAT DO I need to do to replace a simple ROKU remote with the right REPLACEMENT ROKU remote so it will actually use the right code for the volume and mute?
Amazon keeps telling me these remotes are right, and so far I've been unsuccessful with either of them.
This DOESN'T seem like it should be this much trouble...
Go back into setup a try setting up for CEC control. IF your tv supports it, volume, power, and mute will be controlled via the HDMI connection instead of by infrared control codes.
Try these tv brands as well: Envision, Auria, Norcent, Viewsonic, Wyse, Magnavox, Philips
If you want to know why newer remotes don't have as many tv codes available, there was patent suit, an upgrade took care of it. Outcome not as many tv codes available as there use to be.
I"ll go back in and play with these 2 remotes, but WHICH one of the two that don't appear to be the same model as the original is the one that SHOULD be working?
Where did the TV codes change - I have a remote. It has at least 8 TV codes to try - I know this because the existing remote (RC-AL7) works FINE and uses the 8th code it tries. With the SAME streaming stick on the SAME TV with the TC-FA5 remote I CANNOT even access as many TV codes. Are the REMOTES determining what TV codes are made available to the TV?
I'll try some of the other brands listed, but which REMOTE should I even be using?
Continuing down the increasingly bizarre path, I've now tried all the Brands listed in the earlier email. None of them worked, with differing numbers of codes tried:
AOC old remote at least 8 codes, new remote only 6.
Envision 4 codes
Auria 2 codes
Norcent 2 Codes
Viewsonic 14 codes
Wyse 2 codes
Magnavox 10
Philips-Magnavox 10
Magnavox (Roku tv) 1
Philips 7
Am I going to have to buy ANOTHER &^%$#@ Roku to get one with a remote that'll work? If so, I don't think it's going to be another &^%$ streaming stick.
Is there a phone number that will get me to SOME kind of Roku support? I've now tried FIVE DIFFERENT remotes (the two new ones I bought, the two that are on other devices in the house, and the ONLY one that works - which still has the problem with the buttons). 4 DON'T work at all, ONE is failing.
HOW do I reach a live human at Roku that can tell WHAT I have to do to get a WORKING replacement remote on this thing?
I'm done. Found a number. Spent an astonishing amount of time with a couple different people, doing the same thing over and over and explaining over and over what wasn't working to different people. Then doing the same thing over and over with the same result.
Eventually, the Roku person told me I needed a different remote. BUT, before that it appears Roku wants me to have AOC change SOMETHING about CEC (I never did figure out what) on the probably 10-year-old TV. I"ll have to try to contact AOC to see if they have something to update on the TV...

Go back and see my suggestion in the first reply to your initial post.
If you mean this one
Go back into setup a try setting up for CEC control. IF your tv supports it, volume, power, and mute will be controlled via the HDMI connection instead of by infrared control codes.
That was one of the first things I tried. And I tried it with EVERY remote I tried. Nothing ever worked using CEC control.
The remote that WORKS isn't using CEC control. Why would a different remote that's supposed to do exactly the same thing on exactly the same TV with exactly the same streaming stick need a DIFFERENT connection than the remote that works?

Maybe just make sure it's enabled? It can be turned on and off on my 17-year-old TV so it probably can on yours too. I have mine turned off anyway. That is, I don't use CEC at all, and also don't use the Roku remote on the TV, but these are just individual choices.
