I concur. It is a giant pain in the buttocks. They need to change it and change it soon. I haven't even had my Roku TV for three months and I'm already planning on purchasing a new one without Roku.
I am going to pile on here....Roku needs to reconsider the decision and make a remote with numbers on it available. with all of the apps driving interest in Roku, it would be really welcome and a huge value add for those of us that have more than one unit on our account.

**bleep**! I just bought 2 roku tvs so that I wouldn't have to use the sticks anymore. I had no idea about these stupid remotes without numbers. Are the makers of these tv remotes insane??? These remotes are geared to roku usage while the live tv seems to be an afterthought.
Is there any remote, such as a universal, that I could buy that would work with the live tv part?- Lan24 years agoReel Rookie
You can use any universal remote you want to control the TV, but it won't change the OTA channel. It is so stupid that I can enter the channel numbers and see them appear on screen but when I press OK or Enter nothing happens.
Sorry.
I have a nice big universal remote so I can control DVD, sound bar and TV and it has the volume controls on the front where they belong, next to the navigation buttons. I was always unintentionally changing the volume on the TCL/Roku remote.
I love my TVs except for this one very annoying fault. I just cannot believe that Roku has decided that consumers are not worth listening to -- and I have no interest in talking to a remote, much less having an open mic in my living room!

I hear ya! You wouldn’t believe the email I got when trying to find out who is the mfg of the remote. They were very condescending! Sad part is if you use the app you can use numbers for the channels… even the sub channels. So it begs the question… why can’t they make a remote that uses numbers. I have little hands an the stupid thinks too small even for me.

DirecTV Stream (no satellite) was my best find solution The basic entertainment package was about $69 plus tax Their device with a remote was $125 or maybe $50 for a refurbished unit
it works and I’m done screwing around with this issue.
I have given up on finding an acceptable remote with channel numbers that I can pair and make work with Roku TV..

I just bought a Roku Express and the remote for it doesn't have numbers. A 3960R but isn't in database yet it appears.
Guess what? You can't blame the TV manufacturer for this Roku! It's your stick and the remote doesn't have channel numbers nor does your guide.

The Roku Express comes with the simple IR only remote. It is not capable of controlling the TV volume, as that requires a more advanced remote. Even then, no Roku remote offers entering channel number digits. Yes, it's been a sore spot for many years with users. Way back when streaming first started, there was no need for numbers.
But today there are many providers (such as Sling or Pluto) that has a channel grid within their app that would greatly benefit being able to directly enter a channel number. One partial workaround is to use the Roku app on a phone or tablet. The app offers an onscreen keyboard, and some (but not all) channels available on Roku devices will allow using that keyboard to enter channels. Myself, I've never tried any of them, as I rarely use one of the channels that have such a channel grid.

this is goddamned ridiculous that this TV has no way to turn to a channel directly.

Just recently they've added the ability to switch directly among OTA channels using amazon alexa. You can also manually key in the streaming channels in the channel guide if you have a smart remote like the logitech harmony, I believe some other universal remotes also work.
Not perfect but it's progress
