Go into your settings, scroll down to system.
Then go to power and scroll down to system RESTART.
It clears the cache on the TV apparently, and it reset my wallpaper after having the same issue.

same thing is happening to me. It won’t turn off for anything. I’ve set the whole thing back to default and it’s still the severance add.
Doesn't work
How do I get rid of the Severence background that you decided that I have to look at. I just want a plain black background and do not need any stupid TV shows messing up the display
I had the same issue and yes, Settings / System / Power / System Restart did resolve the issue.
The takeover of my homescreen has been bugging me for months. But this one was a deal breaker! I was seriously looking at ditching Roku over it.
Thank you!

Settings > System > Power > System Restart
This was the only thing that helped me too! I had all other things turned off as well.
Hopefully this will help others to do this right away after turning all others off!
