I don't use a NAS. I just have a computer with a tall tower case with plenty of room within for hard drives. I have 5 hard drives, totally about 30 TB of space. Since it runs Windows, I have both Serviio and Plex installed, although I only use Plex when I travel for access with my travel Roku device. For home access I use Serviio, since it is very customizable. In fact, I liked Serviio so much that I wrote all the Roku profiles that ship with it. Even when it has to transcode a file, I can still use it for basic stuff like web surfing, or even editing commercials out of my OTA recordings. I realize some people would prefer to have something running that takes less power, such as a NAS. I like having a computer I can directly interact with and modify as desired. Different strokes for different folks 😄
