I have similar issues. I have a Samsung Galaxy S20 Fe running One UI v. 5.1/Android v13 - Last updated Apr 2 2024. The ROKU app is v 10.2.1.3458848 (up to date).
I would like to be able to run this in the background. That doesn't seem to be an option provided in the ROKU app settings.
I use the app for private listening.
Problem(s):
1. The phone disconnects from the ROKU device when:
a. I use other apps on my phone.
b. When NOT using other apps, but the screen times out. (Which happens much quicker when phone is not charging.)
Results:
To begin with, it's a hassle. Also, when the app disconnects from the device, the TV starts playing sound which disturbs the people (sleeping for example) I am trying to help to not hear the TV.
Is there a fix for this?

Rusm, I don't generally use the app for private listening, but since I have a similar phone with the same OS I thought I'd give it try. Granted I've only been using it for a few minutes, but I can turn off the screen or use other apps and the sound continues even when I use another app to watch a video. When I click on the 3 vertical lines button that brings up recent apps it shows I have two running in the background one of which is the Roku app.
I don't like how it makes my phone hot and seems to eat the battery, so I don't think I'd ever use it.
