My TCL Roku TV attempted to update but got stuck at 100% for hours. After waiting, I finally unplugged it, and when it restarted, it tried checking for updates again—only to stall at 100% once more.
The next time it restarted, I canceled the update to try and use the TV with its current software/firmware. However, instead of working, the screen stayed blank with a purple background, showing only “TCL | Roku” in the upper left corner—essentially bricking the device.
I then tried to enter Recovery Mode and update via USB. However, I’m stuck at Step 1 of the USB Updater because it keeps saying:
➡️ “Unrecognized model. You must enter a valid Roku model number to continue.”
I’m entering exactly what the screen displays, but it’s not being recognized.
I’ve attached a photo of what I’m seeing. Can anyone help me get past this? At this point, even a zipped file of the firmware would be a huge help.
Thanks in advance!
Can you get it connected to Wi-Fi at all? Sometimes connecting to a phone's hotspot will get past the update.
H999X would appear to be the Roku model number, but I don't see it in their list. It's not the first time I've seen this, but I don't know what the solution is. What's the TCL model number on the back of the TV?
Have you tried contacting TCL? They'll probably just point you back to Roku, but it's worth a try.

Thank you for your reply.
I am able to connect to wi-fi. It seems that it is doing it automatically because I can't get into the settings at all. When I turn the set on it pops up and says it can't connect. I wait a moment and try again, and then it says there is new firmware. I download, get stuck on 100% every time. Have to unplug and it starts all over again.
TCL did point me back to Roku.
The TCL model number is 40S355
Try using H102X as the model number on the download page.
Thank you! That definitely got me closer! Not I'm stuck on "Progress: 89%"
I'm gonna pull my hair out. lol
