This worked for me so if it helps someone that would be great!
I really like the volume control and also the powering off the receiver with the roku remote , so when that stopped working I tried everything from the factory resets to power cycling etc.
I would like to mention that we were also having thunderstorms at the time and took out the cable box that was occupying one of the hdmi inputs to the TV, My TV and my receiver are on battery back up but this cable box was not it was also quite old and I guess it couldn't handle the brownouts we were having, interestingly enough the Internet modem was taken out as well it was also old.
I left everything powered on , leave your arc hdmi plugged in to the tv and the receiver
unplug all other hdmi inputs to tv , your receiver should power off..... power the receiver back on with the power button on the receiver , plug your hdmi inputs back in.
You now should have receiver control through earc . Hope this helps someone.
