Private Channels through "https://my.roku.com/account/add" always goes to 404 page at last step.

Jump to solution

As the subject states, anytime I now try to add private channels through the URL "https://my.roku.com/account/add", the final step always takes me to a 404 page.

I have done this process before with success, but after some time of not using this feature, it now seems to no longer function. I have attempted to do this through the web on my computer and cell phone both, using multiple browsers, and by trying a variety of channel codes that should be up to date and functional.

Are private channels no longer supported? Is anyone else having success with this in the last month or so?

Porn Hub should not be a problem. Roku doesn't allow the app in the store, but they have never prevented that app from being loaded by a code. Porn Hub has, to my understanding, attempted to keep content providers from uploading content to which they don't have rights, so piracy isn't generally an issue with that app.

Additionally, I just successfully added the app to my Roku, so it's not a banned app. So let's rule out 2.

Could be a glitch on your end. Restart your network and your Roku device, then try again. If it still doesn't happen, that leads away from 1 though it doesn't fully rule it out , and toward 3.

If you've added other non-certified apps (Private Channels) in the past, then this is possible, particularly if they are pirate TV apps. Most apps that advertise themselves at IPTV apps/services are illegal, so if that's something that you may have added in the past, this could be what's going on. You may want to reach out privately (via PM) to @RokuDanny-R or @RokuKariza-D for help. They could check the status of your account if you think this may be the case. Not saying they'll re-enable the ability if this is what happened, but it could at least get you an explanation.

Adding non-certified apps (Private Channels) works. It could be a couple of things going on.

  1. A glitch. It may clear up later.
  2. The app you're trying to add violates Roku's Terms of Service (ToS). This often means apps that provide access to pirate content. You won't be able to add any that Roku has identified as such.
  3. You have previously added apps such as pirate content apps. Roku will block you from adding any non-certified apps going forward.

If it's the first, simply wait for things to clear up later. If it's the second, don't do that. If it's the third, well, that's what happens when you do that. If you're unsure, perhaps share with the group which app, and we could try it ourselves, or let you know if it's a pirate app.

For #1, I doubt it's a glitch (at least not isolated) as it has behaved this way with my account for a few months now.

For #2, I guess it's possible? I was attempting to add the PornHub channel. Note, when it failed initially, I attempted a variety of other adult content channels and some random others just for my own testing. It's been a while ago, so not really sure what all I tried.

I don't imagine it being #3, but I honestly wouldn't know. For all I know it was a glitch initially and I tried so many random ones I found online, it could be that one of them got me blocked in the process of testing? Kind of baffling to give a 404 error after finding the channel rather than an actual explicit error if that was the case. Re-using HTTP Status Code 404 for this purpose seems below the quality of what I'd expect.

If it's #1 and a glitch with my account somehow, what would be my next step? Customer service?

If it's #2, I assume a different guaranteed non-pirate flagged channel could be attempted. Any suggestions?

If it's #3, does my ignorance just mean this is no longer a feature accessible to me? If so, sounds like I may as well switch to a different streaming hardware if my whole account is hosed.

I've been trying to get Pornhub on my ROKU PREMIERE PLUS, and always get the **bleep** 404 message.

How could I be banned when I've never tried to do this before?

ROKU is really pissing me off!

@Me15

Thanks for the post.

Please be aware that Roku does not review or provide support for non-certified channels. For more information about private channels, visit our Support page here: Add a non-certified channel

For more information about that channel's features and functionality, you'll want to contact the channel provider support directly to inquire further. Many channels on Roku are developed and maintained by the channel provider themselves.

Thanks,
Danny

@RokuDanny-R

Roku does not review or provide support for non-certified channels, but does Roku support adding non-certified channels as a Roku feature?

Seems to me that by seeing a 404 page on Roku in the process of adding one that this is a Roku problem rather than a non-certified channel problem.

404 is page not found, implying a website issue. I’ve happily changed services due to this issue and the lack of support other than this forum with static auto-responses.

 Ty again @dbdukes for the personal effort you put in here!

I am also always getting a 404 error when I try and add a private channel.  This is the first time I have tried private channels so it isn't something with my account.  I have tried several different ones I found online and it looks like it will add it and shows the icon so I know it is a legit code and then just 404 errors.

@ RokuDanny-R

Every single person I know who tries to add ANY private channel gets the 404 error, after waiting for the site to register their code, knowing they are not a robot. They click again, then get the 404 error on the website. We get that Roku does not endorse or support channels. However, in the service we all came aboard Roku for, we were all under the impression that Roku allowed Private.... now some call them "Secret" channels. It is now appearing that NOBODY is allowed to add private channels, even as a first private channel on their device. Can you look into this? If the rules have changed, us consumers should be allowed to know. I do know that in the past, private channels were allowed and if attempted to add a copyright issued channel, the addition was blocked. If said channel was deleted, we received messages that the channel was blocked. One example of a channel that got a message was the "LoCast" channel, which was legal, then became illegal. I received a message that it was no longer allowed on Roku. Then next day, tried again... "channel was removed" and did not load.

Please supply some sort of word as to why EVERYONE I KNOW gets this same 404 message. You are not supporting the channels, but are supporting our right to have them... which is why you are in America.

One more note: I DID contact the private channel provider. They were not blocked on Roku. It appears to be a Roku issue, with so many having the same issue, even with a virgin (no private channels ever added) devices.

And to the guy that talked about IPTV channels being illegal (@DBDukes)... What about BigBostonNetwork and illegal feeds of cable "news" nets?
