Cinema Box is saying that it’s no longer available. Why?

Cinema Box now says that it’s no longer available. I just used it last night. What happened to it? So annoying

  • Hey everyone!

We see you're asking about accessing the Cinemax Box on Roku.

As of 03/03/25, the Cinemax Box is no longer available in the Roku Streaming Store.

When a app disappears like this, it's usually because it's been removed from the Roku platform, sometimes by the content provider. While we know this might be a bummer, don’t worry—there are still plenty of great options to explore!

Here are a few ways to find new apps:

    • Featured apps: Check out the featured channels on the Roku Channel Store homepage.
    • Recommended apps: Explore apps based on your viewing habits and preferences.
    • Free Movies & TV: There are some popular free apps available on Roku too.
    • Browse by Categories: Explore categories like Music & Podcasts, Food & Home, News & Weather, and more to find apps that match your interests.

For more info, check out this link: Why is an app no longer available on my Roku streaming device?

Hope this helps! If you’ve got more questions, feel free to reach out anytime!

    Happy Streaming! 💜

    Thanks,
    The Roku Community Team

  • I agree. Bring back Cinema Box!

They have a great selection of films from the 60’s and 70’s!

  • Please bring back Cinema Box for the sake of your older customers who love the old classics that still have meaning like White Christmas and Superfly!

  • I went to watch movies tonight and it was gone. That is now 3 channels lost

    Crackle

    Redbox

There have been threads about that one before. Some think it's just due to being a single man operation and others suggest that it is playing content without permission. (Copyright Whac-A-Mole.)

3 channels lost? I'd say more like hundreds if not thousands over the time Roku has existed. But many channels were created over that time too. I expect that to continue for years - for now, streaming is the wild wild west of TV.

Redbox and Crackle, I believe were both owned by Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, who went bankrupt and took a lot of brands and streaming services with it.  I can feel your pain as I was a fan of the rental Kiosks of Redbox.

That may be the case for Cinema box as well, especially now as there are a lot of mergers and contraction of streaming services and bankruptcies as a number of these services are finding it hard to be profitable due to the overwhelming competition and cost to maintain and create content.

In addition, as previously mentioned, that doesn't include apps that are playing content that they are not legally entitled to do or have violated copyright laws that get shut down from time to time.  I can't say that is true with Cinemabox, although I have read some rumors that may have happened.

As Makalguy stated, Roku has little control over those individual brands/apps it doesn't own, which is the case for the majority of apps on Roku devices.

You could always attempt to contact customer support for Cinemabox directly (instead of Roku) and see if they respond and could provide more specific information for their app being down or unavailable.  It may be something as simple as a technical or server issue on their end.

Oh man....you sound like you're trying to make an intellectual argument as to the demise of the "Cinema Box" and "Movie Time" apps, however neither one of these were profitable, as neither advertised, charged a subscription fee, or offered any pay-to-view movies, on their app....it was totally "FREE" !!! So they were voluntarily doing this as a free service to much older, fixed income senior audiences, who would be interested in viewing 40 to 80 year old movies....something the major ROKU audience isn't the slightest bit interested in..!!

Don't get WOKE and go BROKE.....Get AWAKE and eat STEAK...!!

  • Because all of the apps like Prime, Netflix, Peacock, Disney, etc....who are all greedy as **bleep**, that have commercials, pay to view, and/or subscriptions, have some of the same movies as Cinema Box, but that you have to pay for in order to watch them. I'm can pretty much assure you that all those big streaming companies, **bleep**ed and threatened ROKU, to remove it, complaining that Cinema Box offered those movies for free, that they want to charge the consumers for, and of course that just won't do !!!....even though Cinema Box wasn't making a single penny from making all those old movies available to the public !!!!

ROKU and all of their corporate whores are responsible for killing Cinema Box, once again....so us older generation customers can't watch all those movies that most of their younger streaming customers couldn't care less about...

Thanks ROKU....YOU SUCK ONCE AGAIN !!

  • I have a feeling that when they started hosting a movie that was two words long, one starting with "S" and the second with "W", someone with 2 big ears might have caught on and shut them down.  It's too bad too, because it was the original cinematic version without a subtitle.

That being said, this channel has come and gone before, and I'm sure it will be back.

WOW! If that is true, no wonder it was pulled. That is a blatant copyright violation. As noted, Roku could be held liable if the service ignores notifications to pull pirated material and does nothing.

Cinema Box channels has time and again disappeared and returned. It's a good channel and kudos to its return to service again. Bring back Cinema Box. I like and recommend Cinema Box channels.

mrniceguy142200, the point is that someone owns the rights to those old movies.  Anyone showing those movies without obtaining some kind of license to do so is breaking the law.  Roku isn't going to condone it.

If you want legally free movies, check your local library. Many partner with Hoopla or Kanopy. You can "check out" movies you can stream for free (or technically paid for through your local taxes.) The only drawback is that you may have a limit on how many you can borrow per month. Both services have Roku apps.
