Re: Cannot play anything on Roku channel only

Jump to solution

Checked for firmware updates.  (none)

Reset router to factory defaults, then reconfigured LAN and WiFi. (Did not work on computer, tv, or Roku)

Reset router DNS servers to Google Public DNS (Did not work on computer, tv, or Roku)

Reset Network Connection (Did not work)

I reloaded the web pages suggested by @renojim but do not see an IP/DNS leak test.  It shows the IP/owner/location, but not DNS.  I did check the DNS settings using IPConfig which shows the Google Public DNS but I had to change it in Windows Control Panel.  The computer was still seeing the router as the DNS server until I changed it.  Not sure if that is expected behavior or not.

Actually not bad that you are seeing these results when set back to default settings.  Basically tells us that the problem is either in the default settings or firmware (as opposed to a corrupted setting).  For some reason, Roku does not like how you are trying to connect to its servers while accessing the On-Demand Content through the Asus router. (Forgot to ask before, but are you able to access the LiveTV streaming from Roku Channel?)

Try disabling the Firewall from within Asus router.   In that same screen, disable WAN pings if enabled.

If no go, then disable the DNS override at Asus (select "Connect to DNS Server Automatically" under WAN DNS).  Then you can do the modem-only test, as well as Asus router test and see if DNS changes.

Remember to restart router and devices after making changes during troubleshooting.

Sorry, I forgot to add the links to test for IP/DNS leaks in previous posting.  You are basically looking to see if the DNS is the same as set in the router, that IPv4 is being used, and if any errors/warnings are being produced by the tests. Also pay attention to the locale of the DNS used.

I am able to access Roku LiveTV streaming with no problem.  Also, not sure if this is a clue, but I randomly tried to stream On-Demand Content from Roku.  So far, I found one show that will stream on-demand.  The Rifleman.  When it starts it says "FilmRise" so I am not sure it is just being redirected to another channel.  I will try to find other FilmRise content that can be run on the Roku channel to see if that works.

Disabled firewall which disabled the WAN pings.  Restarted the router, computer, and roku (testing on the two different devices).  Did not fix the issue.
When I run the IP/DNS leaks sites I get different results but no errors.  I noticed that none of these return the DNS IPs that I added into the router manually.  8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4   All of the addresses that are returned say they are from Atlanta except on in the first list which only says United States.

https://dnsleak.com/ - returns a list of 12 different DNS addresses.  This changes everytime I run it.  All the addresses listed are either Cloudfare or Google

https://www.dnsleaktest.com/ - returns one DNS server.  Same server every time.  Cloudfare

https://ipleak.net/ - I don't see any DNS address.

I will set the router back to obtaining the DNS from the ISP, then reboot all the devices.  Connect the computer to the modem directly and note the DNS IP address, then switch the computer back to the router to see if the same DNS is being used.

Set router back to obtaining DNS from ISP, then turned router and computer off.

Connected computer directly to the modem and streaming on demand worked.

https://dnsleak.com/ - returns 4 DNS addresses.  Two from Shentel  - Warrenton) and two from Cloudfare (ATL) (204.111.1.67, 204.111.1.3, 108.162.236.47, 108.162.236.33)

https://www.dnsleaktest.com/ - returns two DNS servers from Cloudfare (ATL) (108.162.236.45, 108.162.236.46)

https://ipleak.net/ - returns two DNS servers from Cloudfare (ATL)  (108.162.236.111, 108.162.236.112)

Turned computer off.  Connected router to modem and computer to router.  Turned on router, then computer.  On Demand streaming no longer worked.

https://dnsleak.com/ - returns 3 DNS addresses.  Two from Shentel (Warrenton) and one from Cloudfare (ATL) (204.111.1.67, 204.111.1.3, 172.71.25.48)

https://www.dnsleaktest.com/ - returns one DNS server from Cloudfare (ATL) ( 172.71.25.82 )

https://ipleak.net/ - returns one DNS server from Cloudfare (ATL)  ( 172.71.25.74)

The only difference I see is that without the router, the Cloudfare DNS servers 108.162.x.x and with the router they start with 172.71.x.x.  Is this difference significant?

All that looks good.  The differences between Cloudflare 108 and 172 are just different DNS IP addresses, still connected to Cloudflare, all in Atlanta - no worries there.  All these you provided pinged just fine and are working.  The router is also using the modem's DNS when set to auto, so good sign from that point.

Unless the firmware is blocking ports, it appears the DNS is functioning properly at both modem and router.  It is actually good that you are being blocked/having issues on the online Roku Channel as well (at least for troubleshooting), because lets you know not confined to the Roku Channel channel/app at your Roku device regarding this problem.  Definitely a router/network issue.

Since the original Restore to Factory Defaults may not have worked, try to do a Hard Factory Reset of the Asus router. (assuming you either used the router GUI previously or perhaps the long Reset button technique.)  This Hard Reset will clear out all settings and use the latest firmware you have installed in its default configuration.  After doing this procedure, just look at the SSID names and passwords and use those defaults for your testing.  Don't change anything at this point.  See if using these router factory defaults helps to resolve issue. (Make note of the firmware versions before and after reset - they should remain the same).

(https://www.asus.com/us/support/FAQ/1039074) - Use Method 1 for the RT-AC3100 which will provide you the instructions/procedure in this link. (https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1039077)

----

This is going to give you the best shot of diagnosing the issue and narrowing it down to the router firmware if the above does not resolve the issue.  It is going to give you a fresh start with this router. (Just a more thorough and aggressive Reset).

EDIT... Just to confirm the behavior you saw before with the Rifleman, try to stream Midsomer Murders (any season between 1 and 10) on the Roku Channel.  I know this also pulls from Filmrise as well.  Many times, a show will be hosted by various Channels/app, but pull from the same CDN (content delivery network), and then all experience an issue. (other times, sometimes an issue is only confined to the particular channel/app and you are able to watch the show using another channel/app).  Not exactly sure of all the variables in play there.

I used Method 1 to reset to factory defaults.  (The last time I pushed in and held the reset button).  The firmware version was the same before and after the reset.  Once the router rebooted, I had to enter a new login name and password for the router.  (Cannot connect to the ISP until that is done.)  I left the default SSID names but was required to put in a passcode.  Which I did.  Still was unable to stream on-demand content from the Roku channel on my computer (LAN), tv app (WiFi), or roku device (WiFi).

I was able to run Midsomer Murders fine just like the Rifleman.

I don't see any filtering under WAN or Firewall.

I purchased a Linksys AC1900 router and connected it.  Everything works as it should.  Thank you all for isolating the problem as a router issue.

My ISP is Shentel.  This issue started around 11-8-2022.  Prior to that everything would stream.  I also tried to stream from the website; however, it does not work. I already tried removing the channel, and estarting my ROKU device.  When I added the ROKU channel, the same issue occurs.  Many of the programs I look at are only available for free on the ROKU channel.
