Charge on my credit card for the Roku Channel

Jump to solution

I have just looked at my bank statements to review all of my streaming subscriptions. There is a consistent charge every month for “The Roku Channel” for 8.99 per month… It doesn’t appear on my subscriptions list and I thought the Roku Channel was free anyways… When I go to manage the subscription on my Roku device there isn’t even an option to manage my subscription… the closest option to manage the subscription says “remove channel”. I’ve also checked every possible subscription on my Roku account and my Roku device and my Purchase History and there is no explanation. I think there is something inaccurate occurring. And I think I may need a refund on all of the months I have paid for this channel.

Are you subscribed to any of the premium channels that the Roku Channel offers?   I'm subscribed to AMC+ through the Roku Channel and it shows up as The Roku Channel on my statement.

Are there more details than just "The Roku Channel"? There may be a company name if you click on more details online, or even call your bank/credit card company. It sounds like it could be a junk charge from a 3rd party. There should also be a phone number related to that charge.

@Mscad2000, thanks for posting that.  I've been thinking these "The Roku Channel" charges people are reporting sound awfully suspicious.  Now I know there's a good chance they're legit.

Yet another reason to only subscribe directly with a service whenever possible.

I’ve been charged for five different subscriptions for the second time. This  is the second time I’ve had to cancel my credit card because of fraudulent charges through Roku. I looked under the subscriptions and I’m not signed up to any of the charges that are on my bank statement. I contacted Roku about the situation and they did not help at all. So now I have to get another new debit card for the second time because of these charges. The charges on my bank statement all say Roku and have the same address.

This is the second time that I’ve been charged for subscriptions that I’m not signed up for. I found five different subscription charges on my bank statement. I contacted Roku and they were no help at all. This is the second time that I’ve had to get a new debit card because of Roku charging me for subscriptions that I don’t have and that I’m not signed up for. I know the charges are from Roku because my statement says Roku and also all five charges have the same address.

That's not how it works. Allow someone with over two decades in the payments industry to clear up that misconception.

First, be aware that all of what I'm about to say is predicated on the assumption that you went to the Roku Subscriptions page and did not see any subscriptions.

The description on the payment card statement is provided by the merchant (in your case, a scammer). It can contain anything at all. It can say "Roku." It can say "NASA." It can say "Queen of England." It can say "Emperor of the Moon." It could even have your name in it; yes, a fraudulent charge to someone else could have your name on it. It can literally say anything. It's supposed to say who made the charge and other useful information. However, yours doesn't. Here's why: thieves will also lie.

Whoever made the charge put that in the description, hoping you would pursue the wrong avenue. And, sure enough, here you are looking to Roku for money they didn't take from you.

It is a fraudulent charge. And the description is a lie. Print out your Roku Subscriptions page information as proof you didn't make a charge, and notify your bank of the fraud.

Now, you said this happened before. You should look into ways credit card information can be compromised. The link I provided (from Time magazine) is just one. There are many useful articles online on how to prevent credit card theft.
