Okay. I'm wanting to hard wire my Roku using ethernet. I know I will need a micro USB to RJ45 Ethernet network adapter to do this. The list of supported models on this website shows a Roku Express 4K with a model number of 3940 being compatible. I have a Roku Express 4k and my model number is 3940RW. Will I be able to use a micro USB to RJ45 Ethernet network adapter to do this as long as it has a AX8877X or SMSC95XX chipset.

Yes.  You have stated the requirements correctly as found in Roku's Support article.  https://support.roku.com/article/360058027813

You can use one of the known adapters listed in this support article, or as users have discovered, other brands of ethernet adapters as long as they are USB 2.0 with AX8877X or SMSC95XX chipset.

The last two digits of the model number indicate sales channel/country and hence button config on remote, maybe preloaded channels, power cord, etc.

So does my Roku Express 4K model number 3940RW support using an Ethernet adapter to connect to a wired network? Is it compatible. The chart shows a model number of 3940 as being one that supports it but it don't have the RW at the end of the number. Mine does, mine is a 3940RW.

What about one with the chipset that does not have the x at the end of the number. One that shows a chipset of AX8877 instead of AX8877X? I found one with the chipset AX8877 on ebay but the one on this website says to use on with AX8877X. Are they both the same and will they both work?

Fairly likely to work. If not, probably can be used with a laptop, Chromebook or other device lacking Ethernet port, so may not be a waste

The numbers at the end of your model number "RW" is a retailer code. (where you purchased it from).  So the 3940RW you currently have is an Express 4k 3940 that you purchased from Walmart. (R means retail, W means Walmart).  You can disregard that "RW" when checking compatibility.  Therefore any Express 4k/4k+ 3940/3941 is compatible/eligible for the ethernet adapter.

The "x" on the end of the chipset requirement (AX8877X) is merely a variable. (Meaning, that "x" that can be any number  as long as it is preceded by AX8877.  For example, the particular ethernet adapter may be AX88772.  That ethernet adapter will work.  The "x" can be any number.  As such, the one you located on ebay is probably stating "compatible with AX8877 requirements" or something to the like.  You should be fine.
