Wireless network requires username and password

Hi everyone. I have a new roku streaming stick +. My wifi requires a username and password to login. It is not a shared network. I tried the suggested fixes, like using the hotel, dorm connection, but that doesn't even come up as an option. I know my password is correct but it doesn't matter since I have to enter a username. Please help  thank you!

@Lumbadog

I'm assuming this isn't a standard home WiFi to which you're connecting. Those usually broadcast the SSID (your network ID), you select it, then just enter the network password. The fact that you're doing more than that indicates something else is going on.

So, tell us about your network situation. Are you using a home network? A college dorm setup? Hotel? You've hinted at that, but it's always best to be specific about the situation if it's out of the norm.

Re: Wireless network requires username and password

Hi and thank you! I have a standard home wifi. My network ID pops up each time. I enter the wifi password and it gives me the incorrect password error code. I tried it again, without dashes, and I still get the incorrect password prompt. I even tried the password on the router. That didn't work either. The only thing I can think of is that my plan requires a username and password to login. That's what I had to do to get my phone hooked up to the wifi.

Okay, that's odd. I've never encountered anything like that on any standard home WiFi setup.

Who is your ISP? Did your ISP provide the wireless router? Or is it one you furnished yourself? Did you set it up? Did your ISP? Did some tech buddy?

Again, requiring more than just selecting the SSID and entering the password isn't the usual way home networks are set up.

Re: Wireless network requires username and password

I know, it's so weird. So, I have a standard TP Link router that I bought new on Amazon. I have a weird ISP that I need to buy monthly and the username and password change each month. When my phone needed to be reconnected to the internet a couple of weeks ago, I needed to reenter my username and password.

The TP Link router is probably just fine. It's gotta be the ISP. That is definitely non-standard, so I hope you're getting a heckuva deal on whatever arrangement you got going with them.

I'm gonna back away and let those with more experience with off-the-wall setups take over.

Re: Wireless network requires username and password

Just guessing here, but...

When you enter your monthly username and password for your Internet Provider account, WHERE do you do this?  I suspect this is via a web browser connected to either your cable modem's user interface or the Provider's website.  In either case. the password there is separate from the password you need for your TP-Link router.

When connecting the Roku to your network the password you need is the one for the router. The router password does not change monthly unless you change it yourself via the router's setup interface.

Re: Wireless network requires username and password

Hello! So, I unplugged it from the TV and let it relax a bit. I tried again using the password on my router, yay! It kinda worked. It made it to download software and failed, which was weird because I had a strong signal. Now, I just get bouncy roko screen and then it goes black. I'll try again tomorrow, obviously I have cranky technology today, sigh.
