I did try an adapter on the usb port, but knowing it needed a driver, and the internals being somewhat of a black box, I didn't expect it to work. And it didn't.
Maybe its just me, but the type of device the Roku is, and for me, with an older "smart" TV, you'd think Roku would figure out a way to do what many companies do, which is ship the replacement, then put a timeline on the warranty return. I love the unit, but so far, the suppport side of things is lacking a bit. I might try to time returning it for when I have extended travel, so won't miss the box, but for now, a wireless connection will suffice, its not an urgent need.
