I got the Roku because I live in an apartment building that has community Wi-Fi and I know Roku has the dorm/hotel Wi-Fi setting. The problem is when I use that setting my Wi-Fi doesn't require me to re-enter my login information because once you login the first time you're set every time you use the Wi-Fi, so setting up the Wi-Fi that way doesn't seem to be working the other way that my apartment building allows Wi-Fi to work is to add the MAC address of Roku to the allowed list of devices and when I do that and select home Wi-Fi instead of dorm/hotel Wi-Fi it says the settings on the Roku need to be updated but the problem is, is since it's a brand new Roku it should be up-to-date so when I click update it gives me the same prompts over and over again.
Brand new Rokus don't come with the latest firmware - they only have enough to get through the initial setup. You can't use the school/dorm option to get through it. I'm not sure why registering the MAC address isn't working, but make sure you're using the supplied power adapter and not the TV's USB port. Just to get through the initial setup you can use your phone's hotspot, if possible. Connect the Roku to that, perform the initial setup, and then connect to your apartment Wi-Fi.
Find a friend/fam member's place and run through the setup/updating there first, then bring it back.

.. or try to use the wifi hotspot, if your mobile phone has one, as the internet connection for setup/update, then if successful change the connection back to your normal wifi. If your hotspot supports a 5 GHz wifi connection, switch this to the 2.4 GHz wifi band for maximum compatibility with all Roku models.
