I have two locations, one in Boston and the other on Cape Cod, where I live. I have cable (Comcast) on Cape Cod, and Roku in Boston - on internet service provided by Comcast. When I installed ROKU about two years ago, I tried to get live broadcast on ROKU. It asked me for the name of my cable provider, which I supplied. Then I entered a code online and it didn't accept it.
Does the cable service have to be at the same location as the ROKU gadget?
Hi Danny. I live on Cape Cod, and I use COMCAST for cable TV plus internet. My wife and I also own an apartment in Boston, about 100 miles away. In Boston we have only internet, also provided by COMCAST. But we are so uncommonly at that apartment that we would rather not pay COMCAST's exorbitant price for cable TV.
We have a ROKU stick in Boston.
We would like to get CNN and also CNBC. These both have versions available to us at no charge, but they do not include the live broadcast, only selected recorded programs. However, both channel give us a 10 minute free preview every day and at the end of the preview, there is an opportunity to sign up for the live channels, apparently at no cost if we have a cable TV provider.
In the hope that having a cable TV provider in our Cape Cod home would count for our ROKU location in Boston, I have tried to sign up, but it doesn't work. That's sort of what I expected, but it was worth a try.
Subsequently, I called both Comcast and ROKU to see if it was indeed not allowed to use the Cape Cod COMCAST for the Boston ROKU channels CNN and CNBC. Nobody at either company knew, but the representative at ROKU was kind enough to do some research and said that, as I expected, I could not use the COMCAST. If there is another way to get those two channels live, but not free, I'd like to know about it. I have found out that I can do this by adding SLING to my ROKU package.
So I seem to have answered my question. Thanks for your response.
