I purchased the Roku Ultra in August, set it up and it worked fine until about 3-4 weeks ago. The Roku keeps disappearing off the the input menu of the tv(Vizio). I have followed the support advice to reset. Sometimes it takes 5-6 times to get it back up. Sometimes, I have turn tv of and on to get it. It is never a reliable pattern. Software is up to date. I have seen the posts about software issues. Doesn't seem the same! Help!
Sounds like the HDMI cable may not be being detected by the TV, resulting in not displaying the Input as available. If I unplug a HDMI device from my Mitsubishi, it will not offer me that Input as "available". It won't even show up as an "Input". If I plug a device into the HDMI, the TV then alerts me that a device is present on that HDMI port.
On other TVs, you can select a HDMI port (HDMI 1, HDMI2, HDMI3, etc) even if something is not plugged into those ports. If I switch to one of these without a device in the port, I either get a blue screen or no signal. (My Emerson does this).
I would see if messing with the HDMI cables solves the issue. Try swapping them to different HDMI ports, reversing the ends, making sure everything is properly seated in the ports and the Roku device ,etc. Next, I would verify that CEC is enabled. This just helps with HDMI communication. Using your TV remote (not Roku remote), most CEC for Vizio is located under Menu..System..CEC. Just select "Enable"
Sometimes just unplugging and replugging the HDMI cable back in will re-establish connection but you should not have to do this. The restarting of your TV and the Roku is kind of confirming this communication loss. Restarting should establish reconnection. But again, you shouldn't have to do this either on a regular basis.
It could be a bad Roku device, but first try the cord inspection and the CEC enabling and feel free to post back with an update.
I am having the same problem. I have a 4800X that has been working perfectly until about a month ago. I tried switching cables, plugging the new cable into a different port on the TV, and finally just unplugging the Roku and plugging it back in.
If I want to use the Roku, I have to unplug it, plug it back in, and then select that HDMI input on the TV source options. This sucks. If anyone has a fix, I would appreciate the info. I'll most likely ask for an exchange if a fix is not available soon.
@Faithy, check the software version displayed under Settings->System->About. If it's 10.5 (or higher) then it's probably the new "power saving" feature that's the issue. You should be able to just press Home on your remote a few times to wake the 4800 from power saving or you can disable it under Settings->System->Power.
@renojim You're a genius! It worked! This might be posted in release notes somewhere, but I didn't even think to search for that. When it wasn't working, I thought something was broken. Power saving didn't even occur to me! It is great that they added this feature to Roku though. I have to figure out now if the screen saver runs for a bit before power saving kicks in. My 4-year-old niece loves watching the aquarium fish. 🙂
