I am using my phone to tether my data connection with the Roku but the roku won't even see the connection. I tried using 2.4 and 5 with no luck. Other devices see and connect to it. Seems like the issue is with WiFi Direct connections. Is anybody able to connect your Roku to a WiFi Direct connection?
I have a Element Roku TV
My Roku can see my phone's hotspot.
What is your Roku model number? Settings > System > About
Not all Roku devices support 5 GHz. The low end Roku devices are 2.4 GHz only.
I assume you have an Android device, since you can easily choose 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz. My Roku can see a hotspot on both iPhone and Android devices.
And why are you calling it WiFi Direct? Is there a setting on your phone that lets you pick that for your hotspot? If so, turn that off.

I'm not using the Android system Hotspot. I'm using a app that shares my data using WiFi Direct.
That explains it. That won't work. You can use a standard hotspot if you like, but what you're doing won't work.
