Roku Premiere Download Speed Poor

Hi, have a Roku Premiere and Verizon Fios gigabyte.  Speed is super fast (usually 250+ mbps).  Can do simultaneous zoom calls on two separate computers at same time.  But for some reason our Roku says that the download speed is 0-10 mbps.  Wasn’t too bad at first.  Picture was blurry intermittently.  Then burry for most of the movie/show.  Then the show/movie would pause frequently to buffer.  Now the show/movie won’t start at all because of unstable download speeds.

Have turned off and on the router and Premiere unit several times.  Updated the Premiere unit.  Uninstalled and reinstalled apps.  Removed all other wifi devices from near the router (Premiere is now the closest wireless device to the router - about 5 feet away).

Any suggestions?  I saw in another post a reference to 2.4 ghz to 5 ghz?  Any help would be appreciated!

Re: Roku Premiere Download Speed Poor

Your Premiere only works in the 2.4 GHz band, but if it sees your network at all, you've passed that hurdle.

This has always worked for me to fix network problems:

  • Restart your router (even if other devices have no problem finding and connecting). Sometimes that's all it takes, if not keep going.
  • Restart the Roku to clear its memory via Settings > System > System restart (for a Roku TV it's Settings > System > Power > System restart). Again sometimes that's all it takes, if not keep going.
  • Find and connect to your network via Settings> Network > Set up connection

If that doesn't fix it, try disconnecting the power to your Roku for a few seconds.  When it comes back up, see if you then can set up the network connection.

Definitely have done that and no improvement.  In fact, the connection seems to have gotten worse.

Re: Roku Premiere Download Speed Poor

Do you have access to your router setup?  Make sure your 2.4 GHz band width is set to 20 MHz.  You can also experiment with setting the 2.4 GHz channel to one that may have less congestion from neighboring wifi installations.

There are utilities you can install on phones/tablets that can show you which wifi channels are being used in your location.  Try to use one that has minimal interference from your neighbors.  Channels 1, 6, and 11 do not overlap other bands and are usually preferred.

Re: Roku Premiere Download Speed Poor

When you go to Settings > Network > About and it shows the speed that's low, what else does it say? "Good"? "Fair"? "Poor"? "Excellent"?

What wireless channel? (Pay attention to what @makaiguy said about the channel.)

Oh, and this is the Roku Premiere model 3920, right? Not the model 4620?

Re: Roku Premiere Download Speed Poor

I have an ASUS Tri-Band router.  Looks like there’s one 2.4 ghz signal and two 5 ghz signals.  I’ll try changing the 2.4 to 20 MHz.  Currently on Channel 1 but will try channel 6 or 11.

@DBDukes

’Good’ on download speed, anywhere between 1 and 10 mbps.

Wireless channel 1.

Premeire model 3920.

Channel 1 should be fine. I have found that 6 is crowded in my area, but that may not be the case for you. I usually have to pick 11 if I have to manually select one.

Regardless, you should be getting better download speed. Normally, 10 Mbps isn't an issue, but from your description, it is buffering, indicating that it's not consistently at that rate.

If changing to channel 6 or 11 doesn't resolve it -- Settings s> Network > Check connection -- and it still buffers, others may have better network suggestions; there are some very knowledgable people here as you'll find.
