It won't have an IP address until it connects to your network and your network assigns it one.

To connect a Roku stick to a network, you need a remote.

You can buy replacement Voice remotes at Walmart, Target, Best Buy, etc.

The alternative is to have your friend tell you the name of his/her network SSID (network name) and his/her network password.  You can then make those changes within your router to that network SSID and password and connect the Roku Streaming Stick.  Then connect using the mobile app as you are attempting to.

After you have it all set up and working, then you can change your router's setting back to what they were originally and the Roku will follow you to the new network name and password. (router's DHCP server has given the Roku an IP address.)

The above will not work though if the Streaming Stick has been Factory Reset.  In that case, you must follow @DBDukes answer and get a replacement remote. (or new device w/remote).
