My Windows 11 computer cannot see the contents of my system (movies, music) when it in Sleep Mode.

Jump to solution

Hi,

My W11 system cannot stream movies or music located on my computer when it is in Sleep Mode.  It even stops streaming if the computer enters Sleep Mode when watching a movie. Using Roku Ultra.

Is there a way to stop this behavior other than not using Sleep Mode ?

Thanks for your help

J

I don't know how to keep the computer from sleeping, but there may be a Windows setting somewhere.  To wake it when you want to stream something from it, you can try a "Wake on LAN" Roku app like this one:

Full disclosure:  I'm the developer of the app and it's 99 cents of which I receive a whopping 79 cents.

I assume you mean you are using your Win11 computer as a media server to stream to your Roku? If so, it needs to be awake so the Roku can access the files. You may want to consider a NAS (Network Attached Storage) device to put media files on. It would be separate from any computer. Some people also use very basic computers and set them up as media servers using Plex or other software.

Thanks for your reply.  a NAS would indeed be solution but I'm afraid it is to costly for my needs.  I am working to get Wake On LAN as suggested by Jim Truscello in another reply to my question:  this method is built in W11 and a "Magic Packet" app for ROKU costs next to nothing.

Thanks a lot for your reply.  I didn't know about the Wake on LAN method.  I got it working on my PC and I'm able to send a Magic Packet from my phone that solves my problem.  Unfortunately I get the error message "Oops. The channel could not be added due to an unexpected problem."  Thanks again for your help.

@JGobeil You could try adjusting your sleep/power settings on your laptop so that the hard drive does not go to sleep and see if that helps.

I found how to make Wake On LAN work with ROKU.  It needs to be set up and used within ROKU TV.  I send the Magic Packet, wait about 1 minute and I get access to my Media Server.  Thanks again for your help.
