Error 016 Occuring Intermittently

Jump to solution

I have two new Roku Express devices that are about two months old.  Generally speaking everything is fine with them, and my home network, except intermittently I have been getting Error 016 on both of them.  Restarting my Roku works every time to solve the problem and reconnect to the network.  The issue for me is I do not know what is causing this and if it is potentially an underlying issue with the devices.  About two weeks ago this error occurred daily for about three days in a row, then it stopped.  Yesterday it suddenly happened again.  I'm kind of in a gray area here because the error is resolved fairly easily, and has not occurred with too much frequency, but it is enough of an issue to have me concerned about what's going on here while the device is still under warranty.  I'm wondering if anyone else has been experiencing this or has any insight on the issue.

Thanks for the reply, @RyanShaner

Your Roku Express is a single-band wireless device; therefore, it can only connect to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. If your router does not broadcast the said network, your Roku will continually disconnect to your internet/router.

Please reply here with the answers to the questions above so we can further help you out.

Hi @RyanShaner

Thanks for letting us know about the issue you're experiencing.

I would recommend checking out our Support page here for recommended action to the error code you are receiving: What should I do if I cannot connect to my home network or the internet?

Please also answer the following questions so we can get a better understanding of what you are seeing:

  1. Have you ensured your router is broadcasting a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network for the device to connect to? The Roku Express is only compatible with wireless b/g/n networks on the 2.4 GHz spectrum.
  2. Have you tried changing the wireless broadcast channel on the router to see if this will allow your device to connect?
  3. Have you tried moving the device closer to your router to see if you can get connected?

If the troubleshooting in the FAQ did not resolve the issue, feel free to reply here with the serial number of your Roku device. You can view it by going to Settings > System > About along with the answers to the questions above. I'll be able to assist you further from there.

All the best,
Kariza

Your reply and questions bear little relevance to my issue.  I am not having trouble connecting to my router.  The issue is why my Roku is DISCONNECTING from my router.

Serial # X004004AHEOW

Had the riku for some time now, 3 days ago it stopped connecting to the network. It sits 2 feet from the router. Nothing has changed.  I have reset the modem, restarted the roku and nothing

Hello @ValerieKluke

Thanks for posting here in the Community!

Please be advised that your Roku Express (3930CA) is only compatible with wireless b/g/n networks on the 2.4 GHz spectrum. Ensure that your router is broadcasting a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network for the device to connect to.

You can also try configuring your router and use wireless channels 1, 6, or 11. Each time you change the wireless channel, you will likely need to apply/save changes before you are prompted to restart the router.

Let us know how it goes.

All the best,
Kariza
