Can't get my Roku 2 remote to pair with my player

The oldest of Roku 2 like xs only paired to Bluetooth remotes. Later Roku 2 models used what current Roku's use wifi-direct remotes. You can't pair the old to the new, nor new to the old. What is the model of Roku and what is model of remote?
