volume with roku express

I just bought a Roku express and when I went to play a video the volume was super loud and I can't change it. I tried using the remote I have for my tv cause I know the Roku express doesn't have volume controls but it doesn't work. What should I do.

Re: volume with roku express

How can the TV remote not work?  Does the TV remote work otherwise?  Are you running your audio through something else?

Re: volume with roku express

Yes the remote works fine but when I try to use it on the express it doesn't change the volume up or down and I can't mute either

Re: volume with roku express

What do you mean by "use it on the express"?  It is still the TV's remote.  It should be pointed at the TV, and if it can be set to control multiple devices, it should be set to control the TV.

Re: volume with roku express

?? "Used it on the express" as in used my tv remote, pointed at the TV, while I was watching a video on my express and it didn't change the volume. I watch the volume go down to zero and it was still just as loud. Other things I have plugged into my TV like my PlayStation and cable box work fine when I change the volume but not with the Roku and it's plugged into the HDMI just like the other two.

Re: volume with roku express

The Roku Express does not control the TV volume. I'm gonna suggest an experiment -- it's a troubleshooting step actually -- that you may want to say you already did. But follow these anyway. Let's double-check and be double-sure.

You say you have cable box plugged into an HDMI port. And you have the Roku Express plugged into an HDMI port. If that's correct, do the following.

Using your TV remote, switch the input on the TV to the Cable device. Start watching something. Anything, as long as there is sound.

Using the TV remote, press the Volume Up button. Did the volume increase?

Using the TV remote, press the Volume Down button. Did the volume decrease?

Using the TV remote, press the Mute button. Did the volume mute?

Using the TV remote, press the Mute button again to "un-mute" the device. Did the sound resume?

Using the TV remote, switch the input to the one with the Roku device.

Using the Roku remote, start some content playing. Doesn't matter what, anything will do.

Let us know the results of this test.
