Using a Premiere with a Pioneer AV Receiver

I have a Roku Premiere connected directly to the e-ARC HDMI output of a Samsung QN50Q60TA TV.

When I’m watching Amazon Prime or Netflix the only sound I get is through the TV speakers.

I have a Pioneer VSX-830 AV Receiver that I use to connect the Cable and the DVD and therefore can get sound to external speakers.

The Pioneer Receiver Audio Features include:

Dolby® TrueHD/Dolby Digital Plus/Dolby Pro Logic II

DTS-HD/DTS Neo:6

DSD Playback via Network/USB (2.8 MHz)

DSD Disc (SACD) Playback via HDMI (2.8 MHz/5.1 ch, 2 ch)

Digital Core Engine with Texas Instruments Aureus™ DSP

192 kHz/24-bit DAC

HDMI Audio Return Channel (ARC)

I have tried to get sound through the external speakers from the Roku device by connecting the Premiere to the AV Receiver but this hasn’t been successful.

What does it take to get a Roku Premiere to output sound through an AV Receiver?

Thank you.

Re: Using a Premiere with a Pioneer AV Receiver

I use an Express and a Yamaha AVR.  I just connect it the simple-minded way:

[Roku, Blu Ray, etc.] -> AVR -> TV

Just standard HDMI inputs on the AVR.  No ARC usage.  Everything "just works" and I didn't adjust anything when I plugged the Roku in.

Re: Using a Premiere with a Pioneer AV Receiver

Do you have an HDMI w/Ethernet cable connected between your TV's HDMI/ARC port and your AVR's HDMI/ARC port?

(It sounds like you don't, since you have your Roku connected to your TV's ARC/eARC port.)

Without that HDMI cable connection as I described, you wont get ARC or eARC, and therefore any sound out of your AVR from the TV or anything connected to it.

First thing you need to do is correctly cable your HT setup as described:

TV's ARC/eARC port <----- HDMI w/Ethernet cable ----> AVR's ARC/eARC port

If you still have issues with your Roku after correctly connecting the cables, come back and ask.

Re: Using a Premiere with a Pioneer AV Receiver

All connections have been made using HDMI cables. With the Roku Premiere connected directly to the TV’s HDMI/e-ARC port I only get sound through the TV’s speakers.

There are 6 HDMI IN ports and one HDMI OUT port on the back of the receiver.

I tried connecting the Roku Premiere through the HDMI IN port 4 on the receiver - the DVD is connected to one IN port and the Cable is connected to another IN Port.

I did not receive stereo sound for Netflix or Amazon Prime with this set up.

Re: Using a Premiere with a Pioneer AV Receiver

You didnt really read my response to you at all.

You cannot connect your Roku or any other device (other than the AVR) to the TV's ARC port - ONLY the AVR can connect to the TV's ARC port if you want ARC (sound from the TV/devices connected to it from your AVR).

Summary repeat:  ARC/eARC only works when an HDMI cable connects the ARC/eARC port of the TV to the ARC port/eARC of the AVR (ARC ports are marked as such).

TV HDMI/ARC port <--HDMI w/Ethernet cable--> AVR HDMI/ARC port.

Re: Using a Premiere with a Pioneer AV Receiver

To answer my own question - could the problem be that the VSX-830-K is not compatible with eARC so routing the Roku Premiere through the HDMI IN port 4 on the receiver is never going to work!
