Update making colors appear too red, too rich

Hi, I have a Roku Ultra 4800X running 10.5.0 - build 4208-C2 connected to a Sony KD-65X7500F, mostly playing videos from a Plex server.  I purchased the Ultra in July and have been using this set up since August without issue.

For the past month or so, we've noticed many videos (not all) as being too red (faces don't look flesh color but really red, all colors are too rich).  I've confirmed the problem is with the Roku as I own a few other Rokus (not Ultra) and have swapped them using the same cables, etc. with no problems.   We can correct the problem using the TV's picture settings and turning down the "color" control - but then we need to adjust for every video.

No errors on the Display settings. I've also tried different settings with same issue.  If on Auto, it sets to 1080p with 2.2 HDMI.  I don't have any 4K content.  Most of the videos are 720p.

Again, this problem only occurred in the past month and so it appears related to an OS update.  Anyone else experience this?

Yes, I have the same problem with a 4k.  Everything is really red on darker parts of the shows.  It only does it on the 4K, all my other roku's, which are regular ones, are good.  Frustrating

@BMorgy @Wischeezhd

Thanks for the post.

If you connect the Roku device directly to the TV do you see the issue occur still? If you are unable to resolve the issue, can you please provide us the following information:
-Roku device model, serial number, device ID, and software OS/version (these can all be found in Settings > System > About)
-does this issue occur on all channels or does it happen only happen when using Plex?
-tracker ID when this issue occurs (when you see this issue occur, press the Home button 5 times, followed by the Back button 5 times)
-steps to reproduce the issue you are seeing
-screenshot of the issue occurring

With more detailed information, we will be able to assist you further.

Thanks,
Danny

Re: Update making colors appear too red, too rich

I have this same problem on a 3821X, only when playing from Plex.  The software version is 10.51, build 4066-CU. I have tested the same material on the same TV with a 3810RW and a Chromecast with Google TV, and both work perfectly.

The problem only seems to happen when viewing 4K material that is encoded using the BT 709 color space.  It is almost as if the Plex app or the Roku is trying to do the kind of tone mapping needed when viewing BT 2020 material on a non-HDR TV,  but since the content is already in BT 709, the colors just get way too saturated.  I have verified that the Plex server is operating in the "Direct Play" mode, which means the server sends the source material right to the client app without any modification at all.

Again, note that the 3810RW  and the Chromecast are working perfectly with this same Plex server, content, and TV.

Re: Update making colors appear too red, too rich

I’m having this issue with our TCL Roku TV with the cable box shows. All the apps are fine. The widget on the Home Screen shows the cable show fine but when I click on the cable box widget or icon the show is in all red and black. Please help!!!

@Henesey

Thanks for the post.

Have you tried using another HDMI cable to connect your cable box to see if you are experiencing the same issue? Have you tried using another HDMI port on the TV? If you connect another device to the same HDMI port that you are seeing this issue, does this issue persist?

Please keep us posted what you find out and we will be able to assist you further.

Thanks,
Danny

Re: Update making colors appear too red, too rich

I'm having a similar problem with my new Ultra LT.

I had the Premiere, which worked well but couldn't handle the wifi needed for 4K (I get over twice the bandwidth with the Ultra).  Some HEVC programs are way oversaturated (but not HDR - no brightness).  Switched inputs and cables and the issue persists.  I have to go to the TV menu and turn the color from 50 to 30 to get a nice picture.

My wife is watching now or I'd put in the build info.  The software is 11.0.  It's a brand new unit and updated itself when I started using it.  Just wanted to add another voice to this thread.

Rarely, a SDR file will trigger the TV's HDR mode requiring the TV setting to be switched from Auto to Off.  I will try to see if I can reproduce that reliably before creating or searching for a thread on that.  It's not as frequent as the oversaturation, which only happens on some HEVC bt709 files.  It only happens with Plex, which is about 95% of our viewing.  But with the old Premiere, hooked up the same way to the same components with the same program files, it never happened.

@chroma601

Thanks for the post.

Please be aware that the appropriate Roku team is currently investigating the issue you are reporting. I have no updates to provide at this time, but once more information is available, I'll be sure to post in this Community thread.

Re: Update making colors appear too red, too rich

This is excellent news.  Meanwhile, I discovered that my Sony TV has color space settings that include bt709 and bt2020, so by flicking one switch in the menu from Auto to bt709, the saturation drops to perfect levels.  This is my best workaround until the team repairs the issue.  It appears the Roku is telling my TV that HEVC bt709 is bt2020.

Re: Update making colors appear too red, too rich

I have the same issue with my Ultra, but it only happens when i go into my plex videos and turn off the subtitles. If i leave subtitles ON the color is fine. The minute i turn off the subtitles, the color goes to red.

Its running the latest Roku software version.

Any assistance anyone can provide, is appreciated...
