Unable to load Hulu playback issue "Network Error"

After no issues with HULU (or anything else) for a few years with our Roku Streaming Stick, I attempted to run HULU this morning and got this message:

"Network error sorry, we encountered a network error. please check the network connection and try again. if this error persists please visit hulu.com/help"

- All other apps work fine (Netflix, Prime, etc.)

- WiFi signal is strong (per Roku network settings)

- Tried power cycling and resetting the stick to fresh reinstall HULU

- I can open HULU via Roku on all our other TVs (a mix of TCL Roku and Roku Sticks - wired and wireless)

- Moved the stick to another TV with the same failure.

That's all the troubleshooting I can think of. The problem seems to be narrowed down this particular streaming stick.

Anything I didn't think of before I replace the stick?

    Hey everyone!

Status Update 12/16: If you're encountering a network error loop while using Hulu, we’ve found a potential workaround provided by Hulu that may help resolve the issue.

Try renaming your profile to remove any emojis or non-standard characters, as these can sometimes cause conflicts with the system.

    Here’s what you can do:
    1. Go to your Hulu profile settings.
    2. Rename your profile, removing any emojis or special characters.
    3. Save your changes and try again.
For further assistance, please reach out to Hulu Support directly.

We'll now close this thread and mark this post as resolved

  • So happy to see I'm not the only one having this issue.  What does Roku think?  Anyone from Roku care to comment?

What does Hulu think?  It's their app.

Good point.  However, Roku has tons of power unlike us tiny insignificant users.  One call from someone at Roku (assuming Roku is not at fault) goes a lot farther than a user like myself.  Roku employs over 3,000 people and Hulu is not an insignificant app...it's not like we are investigating a Star Trek app with say 300 users.

  • I'm having the same issues, but I found a workaround. Search for hulu (dont click on the downladed app), open the app, select any movie, click watch now. When it gives you the network error, click the back button on your remote and you're in! It's annoying, but until they get it fixed it's a way in.

That works! Thank you! Hopefully Roku figures this out soon.

This does work. How **bleep** that we have to do this when we pay so much for Hulu.

  • When installing Hulu app on my Roku TV I get this error:

"network error sorry, we encountered a network error.  please check the network connection and try again. if this error persists please visit hulu.com/help"

All of my other apps on the TV work fine.  I tried reinstalling the Hulu app and then reset the Roku TV with a full factory reset.  Everything was erased on the tv...network settings, apps, etc.  I then installed the Hulu app again and still get the error.  What's strange is the Roku TV downstairs works just fine and was off when I tried to fix everything.

    Anyone have ideas?  Thanks!

  • I’ve been having this same issue since last week. It’s been such a pain and i was on chat with Hulu for hours and they didn’t know what the issues was. Roku needs to step in.

  • We are currently working on this issue from Hulu's side, if you want to inquire about it you can ask for Known Issue ending in -525 calling 1-888-265-6650, there is no timeframe of resolution as of right now as this is being worked on since 12/07/2024 and we need to get more details about it, the workaround so far is:

Remove the application and add it again
Restart both the Internet modem and the Roku device

    Check for software updates
    Check internet speed
    Recommended bandwidth:

3.0 Mbps for Hulu's streaming library
    8.0 Mbps for live streams
    16.0 Mbps for 4K content

If this does not work, the recommended course of action is to use a different device until the issue is resolved.
You can also contact Roku support at 816-272-8106.

  • Been having exact same error for 2 days straight.  Roku smart TV in bedroom has no issue with Hulu but Roku streaming device in living room is consistent network error every time I try to log on.   Weirdly, Disney plus and ESPN work fine too. When I click to turn on Hulu app, I notice a small white line. I think it's been corrupted. Hulu help was unable to come up with anything.

  • Hi guys. As per the title, my Hulu hasn’t worked in over a week. Every time I try to open the app it says there is a network error. The rest of the apps are working fine along with our wifi. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled still no budge. Roku and Hulu have been responding to some customers on Twitter with no answers on how to solve this, just saying they’ve been working on it. I’ve had my Hisense and Roku plug in for months with 0 issues before. And it seems like the problem just happened randomly. Anybody else experiencing this?
