TCL Roku Tv toggles between TV and Private listening

I have a TCL Roku TV. The remote does not have a headphone jack.

Most times when we turn on the TV, the volume icon is headphones with a slash through it and a volume number beside it. When the icon is the Headphones with a slash through it, sound does not play. It will toggle between this and the speaker icon for about 5-10 minutes and then play from the speakers after that. We have the app and can choice to play through the app and the icon will change to headphones with the volume being completely full. And the sound comes from the phone.

recently it toggles between the slashed headphones and speaker none stop and I need to know what is wrong and how do I fix it!?

Your remote probably has a mute button on the side.  Make sure this button is not stuck in the depressed position and pops back out when released.

Thanks @makaiguy for your response. The mute button is not stuck in and “clicks” just fine. The remote is clean with nothing “sticking”. When we mute the TV the icon changes to a speaker with a slash through it

😞 any other ideas?

That slashed through icon indicates the tv is muting its sound output.

If you remove the remote's batteries does the problem continue?  If it does that means the remote is not the source of the problem.

When the remote is sending infrared signals you can see this as a flash if you point the remote towards a digital camera or the camera in a cell phone and observe on the device's screen.

Re: TCL Roku Tv toggles between TV and Private listening

Good morning. Removing the batteries did not change a think. And I understand the slash is it muting but it doesn’t make sense that is toggles between the two icons of headphone and speaker. And the headphone icon will and will not have the slash. It also toggles that. 😞 but at the end of the day the audio doesn’t come through with the headphones

Well, at least we've eliminated the remote as the source of the problem.

Sorry, I didn't pick up that you were seeing two different icons, one with earphones and other with speaker.   Sometime when I can get my wife off our TCL Roku TV, I'll have to experiment and see what icons I get -- I don't recall ever seeing one with headphones, but then I don't use that tv much, and almost never with private audio.

My opportunity came sooner than I expected.  When using the Roku app on the phone and turning on Private Listening, I do get the earphone icon on the tv screen.

But Private Listening is only in effect when the tv is set to either display over-the-air broadcasts from the antenna input, or when streaming via the Roku capabilities. The phone app notifies me of this when I turn on Private Listening -- I guess I never bothered to read that notice before.

We also have a Directv receiver connected via HDMI. I can't turn Private Listening on via the app when viewing this input, and the Private Listening button in the app has a thin red line though it.   But if I have Private Listening already set to on when I go to this input, THEN I get no audio through either tv speakers or the phone, and it still will not respond to the Private Listing button when I try to turn Private Listening off.  While in this state, if I try to adjust the volume using the remote side buttons, then I do get the crossed-out earphone icon on the tv screen flashing on temporarily.  The only way I've found to get out of this state is to return to the home screen and turn Private Listening off there.

Our TV is set to start up viewing Directv as that's what my wife does most.  So if the TV was left on Directv while the phone app is set to Private Listening, it starts up in the state you describe.

She's back on the set now so I can't do any further experimenting at the moment.  If you leave the set in that state when it is turned off and then subsequently turn the app off on the phone, I don't know if the problem state carries over or if the fresh start on the tv clears it.  I suspect you may have to have the app running and turn Private Listening off as described above.  It also might be that a restart of the tv (Settings > System > Power > System restart) might clear it as well.

I'm guessing if the conditions I described above stay in place for several minutes, your system detects this and tries to switch Private Listening in and out several times to try to get it established, and when this continues to fail, just turns the tv speakers on.  I never thought to just leave it sit for a while to see if this is the case.

I was unaware of any of this, as this is mostly my wife's set and she NEVER used the Roku app, let alone Private Listening.

So I guess the moral of the story, at least for my installation, is to not leave the app in Private Listening mode when not watching the tv.

Re: TCL Roku Tv toggles between TV and Private listening

Thanks again. The problem has worsen. Now I can only get audio from my phone and the audio no longer plays from my TV. The icon is headphones and I can adjust the volume from the remote but no sound plays. Or I can use my app and the headphone icon with volume at max is shown. I no longer get the speaker icon.

is there a number I can call for Roku to trouble shoot?
