Soap opera effect after 10.5 update

Action smoothing and LED motion clarity are off but I continue to get soap opera effect on any movie I watch. This started after updating to 10.5.

Has anyone else experienced this and fixed the issue?

Re: Soap opera effect after 10.5 update

Hi @DoctorCHAPATIN,

Welcome to the Roku Community!

I'd be happy to take a closer look to see how we can help. A few questions here to better understand what you're experiencing: What Roku model device are you using? Which streaming channels are you experiencing this issue on? We'll also need a TV brand and model. Does it happen when using your regular TV or different HDMI inputs? If possible, could you please send us a video?

With more information, we will be able to assist you further.

Regards,
Mary

Re: Soap opera effect after 10.5 update

I'm using a Roku TV TCL novel 55R615. So far this has happened on all streaming channels that I've tried. Netflix, movies anywhere, Disney+, Hulu, and Vudu.

I've tried Chromecast through HDMI and I'm getting the same effect.

Happy to send a video.

Re: Soap opera effect after 10.5 update

i already had similar issues with this as my Hisense Roku tv is forcing 30fps and 60fps playback on each of those apps depending on the app's content compatibility for the playback and they have removed the advanced display settings among others so I have no way of manually changing anything to help. It's literally picking the higher frame rate to output and I can't change anything. Nothing streams at 24fps. Netflix prime Hulu Disney+ IMDb tv the Roku app itself etc all are forcing higher frame rates making the content unwatchable.... There are two basic Rokus and two Roku tvs in the house and at first it was just one tv that recently came out of the box a couple months ago with that problem (and Roku support just blamed the manufacturer and ignored) but now the 10.5 update came and Every single device in the house is doing the same things. literally no one can watch any TV or movie content (which are meant to be viewed at 24fps) anymore on any of our devices. I also verified it's not the tv hardwares or the other devices. Its Roku because now even if I play something straight from the Roku app on my phone it's doing the same thing ..I hope Roku figure this mess out fast! They were good products but their quality just keeps getting worse and worse as the years go by.

Re: Soap opera effect after 10.5 update

What does the 'soap opera effect' mean?????

Re: Soap opera effect after 10.5 update

@dragonboots2005

Soap opera effect is consumer lingo for a visual effect caused by motion interpolation, a process that high definition televisions use to display content at a higher refresh rate than the original source. The goal of motion interpolation is to give the viewer a more life-like picture.

Re: Soap opera effect after 10.5 update

@RokuDanny-R

I'm still having the issues.

Here's what you've requested.

Model: 7120X - Roku TV

Software version: 10.5.0 build 4201.30

This happens with any channel and also with external devices such as Blu-ray player or other streaming devices connected via HDMI.

Tracker ID 32-459-728

To reproduce just play any movie.

I've added a picture of Jungle Cruise on Movies Anywhere and it shows the soap opera effect. It looks as if the movie was recorded with a camcorder.

These are the picture settings at the time is this picture.

TV brightness - normal

Picture mode - normal

Picture size - direct

Local contrast - not available

Dynamic contrast - high

Color temperature - normal

Anton smoothing - not available

Natural Cinema - not available

LED motion clarity - off

Re: Soap opera effect after 10.5 update

Same problem here after 10.5 update.  Makes soccer look better but if this is the cost for that, forget it!  Already called in, have an incident # that was supposedly escalated.  We'll see I guess.  Please folks, LEAVE SOURCE MATERIAL ALONE.
