Roku randomly disconnects and TV switches to a different source

My Roku has suddenly started to disconnect- my TV switches to a different source randomly. I have bought a new hdmi cable and usb and swapped each of them out to see if either are the issue, but it has not resolved. I have also completely reset my Roku which hasn’t helped either. I have unplugged my Roku and tv but nothing seems to work. Sometimes, just before the Roku disconnects, my TV says ‘disconnecting from anynet device’ - it is a Samsung TV.

Re: Roku randomly disconnects and TV switches to a different source

@lablett

That doesn't sound like Roku behavior.

Roku won't change the TV input source. It will notify the TV that it's up and running, and if the TV is configured so, the TV will change the input source, but the Roku itself is not changing the source. Using a classroom analogy, the Roku is "raising its hand" and the TV is "calling on it." The Roku is not simply "speaking up." I hope the analogy makes sense.

If the Roku power fails, the TV input source won't change, rather the signal will drop and if the TV does anything, it will shut down, not change input source.

It really sounds like something is sending a signal to the TV from another source. Or, the TV software has a glitch and is thinking it's getting a call from another source. Remember how I said the Roku doesn't actually change the input source, but rather tells the TV it's active? Other devices can do that too. And if the TV thinks (or realizes) another device is "raising its hand" then the TV will initiate a switch of inputs.

So, what's connected to the input/port to which the TV is switching? That is where to start when looking for the culprit.

Re: Roku randomly disconnects and TV switches to a different source

Thank you for this detailed response! Nothing else is plugged into the TV, but the source channel it automatically switches to from HDMI, is ATV

I'm obviously having a brain cramp. ATV? What is that?

I’m not sure, it just switches source and says ATV at the top where it would say HDMI, and shows static on the screen

Static? That would indicate possibly antenna TV or analog TV. But usually "Ant." would be the abbreviation.

What is the brand and model of your TV. The owners manual may offer some guidance.

As for why it would change inputs, that's normally only if one of two things happen.

I covered one earlier: a different input sending a signal and the TV recognizing and changing.

The other? The TV getting a signal from a remote to change the input. That's rare, and never fun to troubleshoot.

Let us know the brand and model of the TV, and we'll look up and see what ATV is. That may provide a valuable clue.

Re: Roku randomly disconnects and TV switches to a different source

Based on some searching, I think ATV probably does mean Analog TV because I find threads about Samsung TVs where people are trying to get their TV back into DTV mode after it mysteriously switched into ATV.

For example:

But a specific Samsung model would be helpful as this may or may not apply to this one.

AnyNet is Samsung's HDMI-CEC feature.  You can try disabling the TV's ability to change the source automatically.  (Depending on your TV remote, 2 different methods. (https://www.samsung.com/us/support/troubleshooting/TSG01111222/)

----

If your Roku and Samsung used to get along, there may be a couple factors you want to look at additionally.

1.  Depending on your Roku model, you may have a Power Savings Feature.  Disable this under Settings/System/Power/Auto Power Savings.  (The Roku device may be entering this mode and TV is detecting a disconnect.)

2. There may be a conflict with Roku's 1-touch Play (Roku's CEC feature).  Try disabling this under Settings/System/Control Other Devices/1-touch Play (Uncheck to disable).

3. Verify you are plugged into power at the wall if you are currently using TV USB port for power.  (In case TV is just detecting a loss of signal from the Roku device.)

Re: Roku randomly disconnects and TV switches to a different source

Model LE32B530P7WXXU

I have discovered that the issue is that the TV is just switching sources by itself- I don’t think the Roku is the issue. I have tried to use the TV remote to disable this feature but I’m not sure the remote is working properly. I can use it to turn the TV on and off but it won’t let me view menu so I can’t do a factory reset. I have ordered a new remote so hopefully that will work. Any other suggestions about how to stop the TV from changing source would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Roku randomly disconnects and TV switches to a different source

@lablett

Thanks for the post.

This would appear to not be a Roku related issue. However, what source is the TV going to? When it switches source, does it keep switching to the same source? If so, it's possible that this is related to a CEC setting issue with that specific source device.

Please keep us posted what you find out and we will be able to assist you further.

Thanks,
Danny
