I have had Roku for years and never encountered this before.
In the last week or so, when watching something on the Roku channel, I suddenly see a black screen indication some kind of error and what to do, but it only stays on the screen for a few seconds, not enough time to read it, then goes back to the video, but then the only button on the remote that then works is the power button. At first I thought it was the batteries, but then found if I power it off, wait 60 seconds, and power if back on, then everything is fine.
I tried to report this using chat, and spent over an hour with 3 different customer service folks going through their whole menu of troubleshooting steps, and my network connection is fine, signal strength is excellent, software is up to date, restart the app, and others, but nothing fixed it. Finally they wanted me to find options in Settings which did not show on my screens and I realized the screens they were seeing were different from mine, so finally got them to escalate the problem.
The problem with chat is that it gives you so little time to respond that the session ends and then when you respond, you sometimes get a different representative who wants you go through the troubleshooting steps you just did,
Now I wonder if I am really getting software updates, although my Software update screen says all software is up to date. I am on Software version 14.1.4, Build 7709, and last update was 12/21/24.
Hopefully this problem will get fixed, or they will at least keep the black error screen visible long enough to read what the error is and what steps to take. Until then, I will just power the remote off and back on.
In the last several days, while watching something on the Roku channel, I suddenly get a black screen with an error message, which disappears so quickly that I cannot read it, then goes back to the video, but the remote no longer works.
If I turn the remote off and wait a few minutes, then turn it back on, everything works fine again.
