Re: Roku Express takes over cable remote

@AnnetteTom

Oh, I was certainly not lumping you into any "dumb user" group. I was simply wanting a second set of eyes on things. That's all.

Hope your party goes well. And perhaps whatever glitch is causing this really unusual behavior will resolve itself soon.

Re: Roku Express takes over cable remote

Okay, we tried a systematic test.  1) used Tv remote to change from cable to Roku. 2) pressed up down right left buttons on cable remote.  It made beeps but no effect on screen. 3) used Roku remote to go to home screen. 4) repeated button pressing on cable remote, same result. 5) selected Netflix channel and started playing a program, using Roku remote.  Went to Roku home screen. Used Tv remote to change input to cable, which tuned into a cable show.   Pressed “guide” on cable remote.  It changed input to Roku port.

Tried one more thing. After watching Roku (PBS channel) went to cable input and pressed off button on cable remote.  That turned the TV off, as usual.  Then used cable remote to turn tv on and cable remote worked normally.  So that is a work around, tho not an acceptable one.

Any idea what is going on?  Have you seen this with other Roku devices?

Unless you see a fix for it, I’m just gonna return this satanic contraption.  Could you suggest what to buy instead?  I’m in between the stick, which claims better WiFi reception, and the pricier Roku that has a Ethernet port so we could run a wire. We have an old house with lathe and plaster walls, so WiFi reception in our tv room is weak.  Any advice appreciated. Thank you.

Re: Roku Express takes over cable remote

I'm having the same issue...the new Roku express is seeing any button pushed on my cable remote just as if I hit the home button on my roku remote. If I'm watching cable and hit any button on my cable remote it changes the TV input and goes to the Roku home screen...currently I'm on the roku home screen and if I hit guide on the cable remote it makes the doo doomp sound like I'm hitting the home button...obviously the device is reading the IR signal from the cable remote as if it's the Roku remote...only bought this thing because of the Amazon support **bleep**

Re: Roku Express takes over cable remote

I’m kind of relieved it isn’t just me.  I ended up giving up.  We can’t even be bothered to return the thing because shipping at our expense will pretty much eat up the $10.  Went to Best Buy, got an Ultra, hard wired it to our router and now have our remotes working properly AND eliminated the buffering.  I’ll never buy a product directly from Roku again.  If you somehow get a better resolution I’d love to hear!,,

Re: Roku Express takes over cable remote

I had the same problem and I fixed it by going from the home screen to Settings, then scrolled to System, then scrolled to Control Other Devices and unchecked the 1-touch play box. The downside is that you can't use the Roku remote to change input by pushing the home button. I have to use the tv remote to change input.

I think this may have something to do with the fact that I could not find my cable provider in the list during set up, so I didn't specify one.

Re: Roku Express takes over cable remote

Interesting.  We have Spectrum, and it was on the list.  We gave up on the express and bought a fancier Roku, but that is good to know anyway in case the same problem recurs.

Re: Roku Express takes over cable remote

It's not just you, Annette & Chris!  This started happening to ours shortly after installing the Roku Express.  We have an older (much!) Panasonic Plasma and have been using the Verizon FIOS remote.  I was also thinking crossover of the remotes' IR signals, but it's strange that any button pressed flips the TV to the Roku input.

I don't recall setting up the one-button control, but I'll have to check the Settings and do some testing.  Thanks, Jared!

Thanks for being the guinea pig! 😄  It was actually difficult finding the right search terms, so I'm adding my searches here to help others.

Roku Express+ hijacked my remote.
Roku Express+ commandeered my remote.
Roku Express+ changes video input selection.
Roku Express+ changes HDMI connections.
Roku Express+ IR signal issue.

Re: Roku Express takes over cable remote

We had the same problem with our cable remote somehow signaling our new Roku Express to switch Panasonic Viera TV input to the Roku HDMI input.   Whenever we used the cable remote to search the cable guide it would switch the TV input to Roku.   We found 2 solutions that seem to work.   First, on Panasonic Vierra TV, go to Menu - Setup - Viera Link settings and turn Viera Link "Off".   Second solution was previously mentioned in this thread.  Go to Roku settings - system - Control other devices and uncheck "1-touch display" .   Both of these solved the problem independently.   Either one will work
