Well, the more accurate description is that the current issue does not seem to be affecting devices that have updated to OS 12.

I still have devices on 11.5 that are working with Redbox.  So far, only one of my 11.5 devices is not working (stuck on the loading R splash screen).

Problem with phone reps is that they do not always convey the accurate info to users. (not their fault, they don't have access to the full issue.  They are just told by someone to tell users to upgrade their devices).  Until I was transferred a couple of tiers up, the original rep did not know that the user could not just update the Roku device themselves.

It is possible that Redbox has decided to make their channel/app require OS12 for compatibility, but if so, they have decided to make the changes prematurely as OS12 is still being rolled out to Roku devices.

As this thread indicates, different users are being told different things, so really just have to be patient and wait for a resolution/fix.  Having dealt with similar issues in the past, I kind of use this as a good opportunity to discover and try out some other channels/apps that are available on the Roku platform.  One benefit of streaming is there is no lack of choices for watching content on our devices.

I called redbox directly, it's working on one of my roku devices but not the others. Redbox says it is on their end and working on it.

Some misconceptions here.

Roku is rolling out the update from 11.5 to 12.0, but it is happening gradually, individual installation by individual installation, not Roku model by Roku model.   At the present time you could have either version on any particular Roku.

If Redbox created an update to their channel app that works on Roku 12.0 only, then that is some pretty bad coding.

I have one Roku stick still on 11.5 and it would not load beyond the Red "r." square either.    I performed a manual update check (Settings > System > System update > Check now) which installed an update to Redbox 3.5 build 1 and now Redbox loads and works.

Looks like Redbox just released a build update that resolved this issue on mine. (3.5 build 1 / 3.5.1P)

Highlight your Redbox channel/app and press * button on your Roku Remote, and select "Check for Updates" or perform Software Update through Settings.  (Settings/System/Software Update)

My Redbox app just just said it updated. Apparently has a fix in the update. Now working.

I experienced the same issue this week, but solved it by deleting the Redbox channel, fully restarting my TCL Roku TV, and then adding the Redbox channel back. Apparently the patch update that Redbox released works, because the app loaded just fine after doing that (maybe the system restart updated the app).

Yes, they fixed it. Deleted the channel, added it back. It's working.

So I was having the same problem...Redbox would not work on my Roku tv..only the R on the screen and that was it. I just went back to my home screen...went to Redbox app and checked it for updates...it updated the Redbox app and BAM back in business. Working great now. Thought everyone would like to know so you could give it a try and see if it works for you.

Hello,

This just happened to me on the RedBox App.  I wanted to watch a movie on Amazon Prime.  Turns out that you have to be a Prime member to watch and cannot rent.  Regardless, this malware happened to my Redbox after downloading Amazon.  Cheers!

Mine is finally working again as of last night (5/1).  Go into your Roku settings and check for updates
