Problems with Roku Streaming Stick overheating

My Roku has only overheated while streaming HBO max. I have used it primarily for Disney Plus and a few other apps and never had an issue.  I have used mine for 1 year and just subscribed to HBO max. Perhaps they are pushing an ever higher resolution than Disney Plus?

Re: Problems with Roku Streaming Stick overheating

Like many others here, I have the Streaming Stick and I have started receiving the overheating message. I have requested/received the extender and continued to get the over heating message. I have now purchased a 3 ft hdmi extender to get it completely away from the back of the tv (even though there did not appear to be any heat coming off of my tv in the first place, and the stick was not enclosed in any way). There is no outside heat source around it, but I can already see it is running hot. I am thinking that it is having trouble with 4K programming that it is displaying. Most recently it occurred when I was playing the Wonder Woman 84 movie on HBO Max. I have also seen it running content on Disney +. Does this stick have a problem with 4K movies in general? Is there something I need to attach to it to keep it cool? No one one this forum seems to have a definite solution to this issue. HELP!

Re: Problems with Roku Streaming Stick overheating

You have 2 choices ChrisF1, I have had the same problem with the sticks. The reason they over heat is because they don't put heat sinks in them (To Cheap to do it) You can either go with a different streaming device or get the Roku Ultra. I received a Ultra for Christmas with no problems at all because they have heat sinks in them that don't cause over heating. I know their more expensive but no over heating.

Re: Problems with Roku Streaming Stick overheating

@ChrisF1

Thanks for the post.

It's fairly normal for your device to get warm during use, but if you are seeing a message on screen mentioning overheating, there are a few things you can do to help.

For more information visit our Support page here: What should I do if the red light is on or I see a “Your device is overheating” warning?

I'd recommend ordering a free HDMI extender from our website and seeing if that resolves your issue.

If that doesn't seem to resolve the issue, feel free to send me a PM with your Roku account email address and the serial number of your device from Settings>System>About. I'll follow up directly to assist you more from there!

Thanks,
Danny

Re: Problems with Roku Streaming Stick overheating

Danny, I have already been to the link provided, as I said, I now have the stick on a 3 foot hdmi extender ( and there is no heat coming off the tv anyway, it is not enclosed, and the tv is sitting on a table type support, about a foot and a half from the nearest wall.). Are you saying there is nothing else that can be done to address this issue? Is it going to melt or catch fire on me? What is an acceptable temperature that I should see on that hidden screen?

Re: Problems with Roku Streaming Stick overheating

I am not doing anything on Amazon and I keep getting a warning message that my route is overheating. It is hot to touch, so I unplug it. It is inconvenient not being able to watch  t v.  So, Amazon isn’t the only problem.

Re: Problems with Roku Streaming Stick overheating

My ROKU  has been showing the heat alert for over a month, received the extender and still alerts. added to a longer one that extends in front of the TV still hot. I finally opened the casing and drilled small holes on bottom and sides and that helped for a few hours. Drilled a few larger holes to the top and it worked, again a few hours then alert. Got frustrated that Roku support has not replied to my query .[bad on their part] Their Technical Department should have been on it after the first 10 or less reports. Housing seems too small for unit to heat up so much, I just took it out of the housing and placed unit on top so heat can escape and no issues so far.

Re: Problems with Roku Streaming Stick overheating

I also drilled small holes on housing but that didn't work for me , guess I made them too small. I finally took it out of the housing and set components on top of the housing and no more heat alerts. At least for now, it's only been a few hours since I did that so time will tell. Yes I think it needs something to absorb the heat and housing could be a bit higher on top with vents to displace heat generated.
