Solving playback issues

Trying for ages to make the shallow sound of my 32" Roku TV set better without spending my life savings. Somewhere I read using Logitech S120 digital external speakers plugged into the headphone jack would work, but I hear nothing. I pushed the volume up way higher than I normally would do. The speakers are connected, as indicated by a blue light. The volume buttons on the speakers are maximized. But no sound. Packed them back into the box. Surely, though, there is an audio setting that tells Roku I have external speakers attached. Where is it, please? Thank you.

There are several brands of Roku TVs (Roku doesn't make the TVs), but I would think that they all work the same.  When you plug something into the headphone jack it should mute the speaker and provide audio to the connected device.  Do you have a pair of ear buds lying around that you could use to test the headphone output?
